I'm a 21 year-old college student in need of help.?

I went to two years of school, did okay, (2.8 GPA). I became separated from my family, and now I cannot get financial aid (cannot get my parents tax info, and based on law, I'm a dependent student till im 24), I want to go to school to be either a Teacher, or a Nurse, but it's difficult saving the money when I have to pay rent among other things. Any suggestions? Or any place that could help out?

I am no longer associated with my parents due to reasons I will not air. But regardless, I cannot get their information.

You need to get your parents information. Every student has to do this until they are classified as independent. If there is some extenuating circumstance why you can't get them you might be exempt (like they are both deceased) but without more info its hard to come up with a good answer.

Nope. No suggestions- because our government sucks. I want to know who the hell decided that you were a dependent until 24- I don't know anyone over the age of 23 still relying on mommy and daddy, but I guess that just goes to show you how important education is to our country.

you should try calling the school's financial aid office. they will probably help out best with any questions that you have.
also i think that if youre seperated and living on your own, you might not need their tax info.
you may be able to use just your own.
good luck

YOu should consider student loans. Talk to your counselor and explain the situation to him.

I have a similar situation and have been independent since day 1 of my college career. You are not necissarily a dependent just because you are under 24 (that is only relative when your parents file taxes, you are still in school and they want to claim you- I am a tax prep as well). There is a question on the fafsa that asks if you are a warden of the state, click YES, this will put your student status as independent and make your EFC (expected family contribution) 0. This is for true ward of states as well as individuals who truely don't expect financial help from their parents and will allow you to get the maximum amount of help. You may have to verify this with the school by filling out an independent form but the school financial aid office will contact you if that is the case (don't fill in parent info). I went through that during my first semester and haven't had a problem since. Good Luck with school.
