You can only get AIDS if you catch HIV from someone who is HIV positive. In order to get HIV the blood of someone who is HIV positive needs to come into contact with your blood through damaged skin. This will happen if you share needles and may happen if you engage in physical contact with them in which skin can be damaged. This includes contact sports, sexual intercourse and brawling.

When it comes to sexual intercourse, you wont get HIV unless skin is damaged by both partners. Also you are more likely to catch HIV through anal sex because the skin is more likely to be damaged by this position, this is why HIV was once known as the 'homosexual STD'.

Remember, it can ONLY be transferred to you by blood to blood contact.
