Info on birds (open for more specific question)?

How does an egg鈥檚 shape and color aid in the survival of the baby bird? And also, why do birds build nests high in trees?

The color aids in the survival generally by providing camoflage. When the parent bird leaves the egg, some nests are prone to predation. You can see how well killdeer eggs blend in with their surroundings here http://www.birdwatching.com/stories/kill...

Also, shape can also prevent eggs from moving and thus being cracked. Not all eggs are layed in nests. Some are layed on bare ground. Some of these eggs are more extremely shaped (more triangular than oval) which causes the egg to merely turn in a circle if disturbed rather than roll off somewhere.

For those birds who build nests in trees, generally this is to avoid ground predators. By building the nest higher in the tree, they take advantage of the fact that there are smaller branches leading to the nest making a heavier predator more likely to fall off or be unable to climb that high to get to the nest. A cat or raccoon can only climb so high before the branches will no longer bear their weight and the animal must either give up the quest or risk falling to the ground.

Eggs are usually laid in a nest and incubated by the parents. Most birds have an extended period of parental care after hatching. becuase other animal live on floors and land and birds can hide in area
