Dealing with Creditors prior to filing bankruptcy?

I am 22,recieved Social Security Survior benefits [at age 15] once my father died.I have lifelong health conditions also.Once I reached adult age the benefits stopped and I applied for disability which is a long process and I am still waiting for approval.
During the last 3 years I have lived mostly on credit cards and borrowing from family to make the minnimum payments. That is no longer an option as of last month so I can pay nothing on my credit card bills.I have written each creditor explaining the situation and explained I have filed for disability and that I have no income and no way to pay at all now. This was daily living and medical expenses.
I consulted legal aid and was told there was nothing to get and no rush to file bankruptcy as I have no assets. The calls begin the second day I was late.Phone is disconnected due to nonpayment too.My question is..
Do I need to ignore contact or is there other information I need to send? How long can I wait to file and not get sued?

I too am in the process of filing bankruptcy. We just began the process in February. My first missed payment was 3 years ago. I was sent to collection 2.5 years ago. I've never been sued by anyone. All my bills have been sent to collections. I receive bills from collection agencies daily. I just file them away. There isn't anything we can do about them. I wouldn't bother contacting them. If you can't pay, you can't pay. You'll get sent to collections. Then, you can file bankruptcy. I do not get phone calls anymore because I've changed my number numerous times and now is unlisted.

Once you file for bankruptcy, any judgments that were filed against you will be stopped.

If they file judgments, they can not garnish your Social Security. I suspect you do not own a home, so they can't touch that.

In other words, if they want to sue you let them. The only damage they can do is to your credit rating. And if you file bankruptcy that's going to pretty much destroy that anyway for a few years.

do what your legal aid said...sit back and wait. I many cases, unless the amount you owe is huge, they won't bother to sue you. They are content to just destroy your credit.
