Since when was 'kool-aid' a racist thing?

With all the references to kool-aid drinkers here, I was a bit shocked to find out how many people thought it was a racist comment!

It's a reference to Jim Jones and the People's Temple and a mass suicide in Guyana -1980, the movie. 1978 the event.

if you are refering to the statement people "drinking the kool-aid," it is not racist just a reference to show that people will follow their leader off of a cliff per say.

I think the stories go that this Jones guy took like 200 people to an island because he thought the world was going to end...when it didn't end or something, he poisoned the kool-aid and everyone drank from it because they believed in the man so much, so there is the reference.

Its not a "racist thing". It is a reference to Rev. Jim Jones and his cult followers that drank Kool-aide laced with cyanide just because he told them to. It is about brainwashing.
The fools that think it's about racism need to do some fact checking and quit looking for things to get upset about.

It is an overused cliche, usually more applicable to those using it than thier target, and demonstrative of a serious lack of imagination and debating skills (come on - who could possibly be ignorant enough to think they will sound clever quoting Rush?) but no - I do not see how it is racist.

Only thing it's ever been referenced to in my mind is the Jim Jones tragedy. I've always assumed that's what the other side meant when they used it. I don't drink Kool-Aide and don't care one way or the other about the reference.
