FAFSA question. Help?

My parents don't pay for my schooling. I'm covering all of the expenses. But technically I am still their dependent since they do pay for my health insurance.

Is there anyway I can avoid filing under my parents tax information? And instead file under my own?

The school I'm going to is pretty expensive, and I need all the help I can get.

It doesn't make sense that my financial aid should be based on my parents income when they are not the ones funding my education.

i pay for everything except my health insurance, since my moms company pays for it.

So, i pay my own rent, i pay for my own groceries, everything.

Is there nothing I can do?

You might contact your school's financial aid office to see if there is a form you can complete for a "dependency override". Sometimes, in unusual circumstances, your school will allow you to prove that you are completely independent from your parents and allow you to only turn in your financial information. Good luck!

I"m afraid the way the federal financial aid system is set up, the only way you can be considered an independent student for aid purposes (besides having a dependent of your own, being over 24, or being married) would be to be legally emancipate.

Sometimes certain schools have separate grants and scholarships set aside for students with extreme demonstrated need who, while still considered a dependent according to the guidelines in the FAFSA form, can provide proof of their extenuating circumstances and provide additional documentation that they are fully independent.

But for the most part, these students have parents who not only do not provide any financial help to them...they also are not in contact with them at all (i.e. their parents have disowned them for lack of a better term) and the student has no way of knowing wh.

Because your mom covers your insurance, I'm not sure your situation would really qualify for this...and the number of schools who do this override are few and far between. But if absolutely couldn't hurt to get in touch with your school's financial aid department and see if there are any additional funds they have for these situations.

The only other suggestion I could give would be for you to consider taking out a private (Chase, Astrive, Wells Fargo) loan. They're credit-based, so you might need a co-signer if you don't have decent credit, but that aside I don't know what other options are there for you.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Nothing you can do about it until you are 24 years old. BTW, the fact that your mom pays for your health insurance has nothing to do with it. She can stop paying tomorrow and you will still have to supply their tax information to FAFSA until you are 24 or get married or have a kid or join the service. Those are some things you can do

Nope, nothing else you can do.

Until your 24 or married or have kids you are pretty much out of luck and have to report your parents income. Not that it would help you much anyway... most dependent kids like yourself that can afford their own place wouldn't qualify for any of the free stuff even without the folks info.
sorry.

There are some options, but as a rule if you're under 24 or 25 (sorry don't remember which) you're pretty much SOL. With tuition and cost of living going up and govt financial aid still stuck on 1970s dollars, the money dosn't go that far anyways, but I know every little bit helps.. It's a screwed up system isn't it?

if you live seperate from them then yes you can, but otherwise then no, you have to file under theirs.

Sorry, but unless you're over 24, married, have children, or have military experience you're stuck.
