Exactly why would parents do this?

I teach a kids karate class and whenever there is a new student in my class I ask the parents about pertinent medical info (asthma, life threatening allegories etc) I have taught one boy for 6 months He is 12 and just thought he was very slow (everything I said i got blank look and no response) He would copy the boys around him. I overheard them talking to a new student. The boy has f*cken hearing loss and for the past 6 months he has never worn his hearing aid (he has one) This whole time I thought he was mentally handicapped . what would go through a parents mind that they wouldn't tell me this? (who knows what else they haven't told me) and why would you not make your son wear his hearing aid when he can't hear ANYTHING!

Either the parents didn't want you to view his hearing loss as a "disability" so did not inform you, or neglected to inform you because they forgot. When you have a child with a relatively minor disability, who is undergoing treatment, and is otherwise able to fully interact with others who would never know the difference, you tend to forget sometimes, and when asked they probably just didn't think to mention it because they are so used to it and it wouldn't have changed anything anyway. They are probably unaware that he is NOT wearing his hearing aide because he probably wears it around them, and takes it off for his peers.

Why are you so angry? If you thought he was mentally handicapped, you should have discussed with the parents the exact nature of his disability so that you would understand how much you could expect from him. Why did you not do this?

I have a kid who did something similar so I bet the parents don't even know that he is not wearing his hearing aide.

I teach karate too and I have had parents do the same thing about serious things! My only logical guess (other than the parents are just stupid) is that maybe they thought their child would be treated different if you knew about his condition... as if you couldn't figure it out sooner or later... who knows. I would just talk to them now about it and find out what you can do to help him. Karate is going to be one of the best things for him to learn discipline and following directions and learning by watching someone for sure... So it would be beneficial for anybody, expecially this child given his condition.

Nobody can be sure why exactly they'd do so, but my best guess is that they might have been afraid it would affect his sparring. I don't wear my glasses when I spar because of that, although my vision isn't affected too badly. Express your concerns to the parents and ask him to wear his hearing aid from now on.

ask the parents if they were AWARE he wasnt wearing his hearing aide...maybe they thought he was going to tell you or you would see it and know. maybe pull the boy aside [far aside] during class while the others are busy and ask him if he didnt feel comfortable wearing it or if he was just scared it would break or what was wrong, and reassure him.

The only thing I can think of is they didn't tell you because they thought you wouldn't allow him in your class if you knew. And with the hearing aid, they might have felt it was safer somehow for him to not wear it. I agree with you, I can't imagine why a parent would do this.

maybe the parents never said anything because they wanted their son treated normally and not like an outcast, or different and the only reason i can think of for not sending the child with his hearing aid is the fear it may get damaged and i'm sure it wouldn't be easy to replace.

I think it is because the parents are embarrassed that they have a child who has a problem with hearing information....that alone could cause them to not put their son's best interests at heart, which is very dangerous for the son!

I would tell you. no wonder hes looking at you like your stupid. They should have told you. I guess you need to start asking more specific questions lol. Ask them to make him wear the hearing aid. Hope everything goes well.

Wow some people amaze me.There is NO reason why they shouldn't have discussed this with you before hand. Mabey they didn't want you to treat him different...But if that was the case then why would they allow him to even join a class like that? Kids will be kids and they will be mean, but not teachers! That is the most ubsurd thing I have heard in a while. You need to sit down with them and have them explain why they don't make him wear his aid.He cannot hear anything you say so what's the point of him taking this class? And if they don't want him to wear it then ask the politley to not bring their child back until he wears it. That can indanger their child along with the other children in the class!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, you have to understand, maybe the parents felt that it somehow undermined him. That he could be mistreated for that. But there is also the fact of that he may get special treatment, and the parents could be a tad head-set. But they should have told you, because even if he did get special attention, it was so he could understand.

Also, I don't think with the sparring going on, the hearing aid would be such a plus(I took karate, and my head was always spinning when we sparred. I remember the head was a point, and it was easiest to get the ears with a swinging motion.)So even if the headgear protects him, there's still the force nailing the aid, if he wore it of course.
