How long do you serve in the US Navy or Air Force to qualify pay for flight school costs?

Here is the problem I am stumbling. I am currently in college and about to get my 2 yr A.A. degree soon. I am planning to transfer to a 4 yr. college/university and decided to pursue in becoming a commercial pilot. I found a university (Central Washington University) that offers a 4 yr. degree to become a First Officer Pilot. The problem is the program is not cheap and costs well over $50,000, not including room/ board and food at the university. Mostly about $40,000 is all from the aircraft rental itself. I don't think my Financial Aid and Loans would be enough to get by. So that is when I thought about the military to help out on this. First of all, which military is the best to look into if I want to get my hands on learning with flying planes? How long do I need serve in order for me to get back to a normal life and continue on with my schooling? How much money would they help out? Is it a lump sum of cash or annual payments? Again, I am looking foward to becoming a commerical pilot in the airline industry or a private company, not a military pilot. Please help me out with good information. Thanks a lot!

A couple of things for starters what you are refering to is called the Montgomery G.I. Bill and it pays about 1200 a month somewhere in there don't quote me on that. To receive pilot train ing means you need a degree before you go into the military as you will need to be an officer to receive pilot training. As for the time needed to serve you will need to fulfill your contract. And also if you go into the military you will need to be able to receive a security clearance in order to become a pilot, however you will not pass your background requirements if you have too much debt. Hope this helped.

one: commercial flying and military flying are two VERY different Balls of wax.

Two: in order to qualify for Aviation, you must already have a 4 year degree in hand.( unless you want to fly Army Helicopters)

Three: everybody and their brother wants Aviation, so the competition to get in is fierce, and the requirements are very stringent.

Four: total commitment is 8-10 years after training. and training..can be two years long.

Five: Payments are paid out in several manners..some, depending on root source. some will be paid out monthly, like the GI Bill. bonuses are paid out over the life of the commitment. usually half upon successful completion of training and the rest spread out over the AD commitment.
