DeVry in Game Simulation and Design!?

This is the situation: I'm currently gonna be going to DeVry University (not Institute anymore) in Austin, Tx. I heard this program barely opened up recently, about maybe 6 months to a year ago for many of the DeVry campuses. I will be starting this program around March. I have not yet paid any money for tuition and all that yet so I'm not in any financial predicaments or anything, yet...

Well here's my question: I've been hearing alotta good things and ALOTTA bad things about DeVry, about the degree you earn not worth crap or hard to find jobs after you graduate with your degree.

Now, I'm not sure if the difficulty of finding a job depends on what you major in, or simply the effort that people are putting is just not enough. I'm pretty sure what you're majoring in greatly effects the chances of you getting hired somewhere.

So I'm asking, is there anyone out there that has graduated from DeVry with success of finding a great career? And if so, explain in detail what you majored in and how the experience was during and after you graduated.

If the experience was bad, explain how it was during and after you graduated; and of course what you majored in.

I'm specifically looking for answers more along the Game Design program that DeVry just opened, maybe people that have graduated or are actually in the Game Simulation and Design program.

I know most of the bad experiences with DeVry have to do with stuff such as: financial aid glitches and technicalities, degress not worth crap, and online classes not being to their fullest potential.

Then again, your major greatly effects that too, I would think?

So yeah, anyone maybe possibly can shed me some info on this school, assure me that I would be making a somewhat wise (or rational) decision?

Like I said, I hear alotta GOOD and BAD things about this school. Maybe its all about a person's opinion, you think?

The major issue here is not really the school. It is the fact that it is a school that advertises on TV that gives it a stigma. I personally have a degree from a distance learning university and get the same scoffs as DeVry grads get.

In any situation that is dealing with a technical degree or certification, the level of applied experience is key to your new job. Just having the degree gets your foot in the door but until you gain practical experience you will not land that dream job. Expect at first an 'Office Space' type of job until your worth is proven.

If you already have work related experience, you can negotiate your way towards something that is not entry-level.

Game design is already an intensely competative aren so expect to exert a lot of energy selling your abilities. While in school, develop a portfolio. You must have examples of what you can bring to the table. Don't settle for one type of work. Try different technologies (you will get into polygons/3D and the like) and styles and come up with good products. You will need to sell yourself on the job market.

Remember that gaming is essentially simulation for enjoyment. Don't keep your options locked onto working for Activision/Blizzard or Eidos. Look for work with government contracts and large companies that manufacture expensive projects that must be built around simulations (CAD designers build ships, simulations put the in the water fighting the wars before it is built!).

Never hold out for a better job when you need to pay the bills. There will come to a point where you will need to accept a job to keep the home fires burning. You will then need to remain active on looking for the employment you need to fulfill your goals. Each job should be building towards that goal

Good luck.
