What is SSI for disabled people?

how does it work, how much do people receive and are they still eligible to receive other aid. What If I have hardly worked before in my life, would I still be able to receive it. Any info/help apprciated.

SSI is for people disabled since childhood and have never been able to work, or for people who did not work long enough to accumulate enough credits for SSDI and are too disabled to work.

Children's parent's income counts toward what is counted as a child's income. After a child turns 18 it depends on whether the child lives in the parent's home and is supported or not. Adults who get SSI can not have resources beyond a home they live in (and can own), a non-luxury vehicle, and $2,000. If they have more income that what is allowed it can go into a PASS account that is for a specific job related expense- like education, a vehicle to get to work etc.

An independent adult gets $637 federal benefit. Some states supplement it. A dependent adult gets less. 2 married people on SSI get less.

You are still eligible to receive other aid, but it may count as income. Once your receive $85.00 in income your check is deducted by 50% of what you have earned over $85.00.

I worked in the field for more than 15 years, so here's what I know:

Someone said that you should qualify for SSDI. Not so, if what you say, "What if I have hardly worked before in my life", is true. IF you have a disability severe enough to stop you from being able to work (you might want to check out vocational rehabilitation services to find a more definite answer to that--just google vocational rehabilitation and the name of your state to find an office) is the first question to answer. Then if you have not had gainful employment for very long, and after application you were determined to be disabled and unable to work, the fund you would draw from would be SSI, not SSDI. How much you receive is within a range but not much, a few hundred a month, plus medicaid, which is pretty good health insurance that comes with prescription coverage.

If you are thinking about this, again, I urge you to contact your local state vocational rehabilitation services office. You might qualify there, because of a disability to employment, for specialized services to help you get a job that makes sense for you with your disabling condition. You can get vocational evaluation, then possibly qualify for job training and placement in employment that is right for you. They help provide a wide range of services so if you feel kind of caught in the middle of two worlds--the fully abled and disabled--look them up and see. You don't have to pay anything for the evaluation part of it, and then if you are eligible, costs are on a sliding scale, so don't worry about that part.

SSI comes from a government fund that is different than SSDI. SSDI is actually a kind of insurance program--the fund comes from our FICA taxes that get taken out of all paychecks. That FICA money is not only for retirement, but it is insurance in case we become disabled while we are working. SSDI comes with Medicare, not Medicaid, after two years of being on SSDI. The cash amount tends to be a bit more than SSI, but again, because SSDI depends on how much money we have actually put into the system through those FICA taxes, the amount people get varies a lot, depending on how much they have worked.

I cannot tell you if you are eligible to receive SSI or SSDI. The only way to find out is for you to apply at your local Social Security Office. You can look up SSA.gov, I believe, and find it. I think you can apply partially online. They will set up evaluations and gather all your medical records to document your disability and then they, Social Security, will make a decision about whether or not they believe your disability stops you from being able to perform any gainful employment.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you.

SSI amounts are based on where you live, etc. You don't need a long work history to apply. You will be evaluated by a physical doctor first, then by a specialist to revue your disability. Call you local Social Security Office for details, or go online to get information. You can still receive Medicaid for your health needs.

You should qualify for SSDI not supplemental.
If you have never worked you wont get as much as someone who has put into the system over the years but you will get something. And the sooner you apply the better off you will be.
Example: in 1975 I went off SS and went to work. I was collecting about $400 a month. I worked at crappy printing jobs (I have a profound hearing ;loss) until 1994 when I hurt my hands. I started collecting $700 a month and not am just over $900.
If I stayed on SSDI from the 1975 I would be collecting $1980 a month

The full monthly allotted amount for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is $637. You can only have $2,000 in resources. You also get Medicaid. You also get a yearly Cost-Of Living Increase in your SSI starting each January 1.

i have one hand (birth defect) i however worked for almost 28 years in a foundry i retired at age 46 i draw almost $1800 a month on ssa i receive no other aid except medicare ins.
