Do you think the RapeX (anti-rape condom) is a good idea?

RapeX is an anti-rape female condom invented by a South African woman named Sonette Ehlers. As a former employee with the South African Blood Transfusion Service, she treated many rape victims which served as her inspiration for creating this device. RapeX is a female condom that is inserted into the vagina much like a tampon. It is made of latex, like a normal condom, but it is lined with 鈥渟hafts of sharp, inward-facing barbs.鈥?If a man attempts to rape a woman, once he penetrates the woman, the condom would attach itself to the penis and cause severe pain to the man during withdrawal. Ideally, once the man is writhing on the floor, the woman would have enough time to escape the scene. In addition, the perpetrator would be unable to remove the female condom from his penis; he would have to get it surgically removed which would be a tell-tale sign to authorities and help in legal prosecution.

In all honesty, before learning the statistics of rape and AIDS victims in South Africa, I would not have even believed this type of device existed, nor would I have seen any reason for it to exist; however, knowing the horrific conditions that exist over there, I would donate money to any woman who lived there and wanted to invest in this type of device. In the Frequently Asked Questions section of her website Ehlers advises that women wear RapeX if 鈥測ou have to travel long distances alone, on a train, working late, going out on a date with someone you don鈥檛 know too well, going to clubs, or in any situation that you might not feel comfortable or even just not sure.鈥?br>
Of course, a device like this is not without its critics. Lisa Vetten from the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation in South Africa states, 鈥淚t is like we are going back to the days where women were forced to wear chastity belts. It is a terrifying thought that women are being made to adapt to rape by wearing these devices 鈥?Women would have to wear this every minute of their lives on the off-chance that they would be raped.鈥?Ehlers responds, 鈥淎s with everything in life there will be negative attitudes and I can鈥檛 be responsible for people who refuse to educate men and feel the device is medieval. I think it has it's pros and cons. Such as it might prevent the rape or it might make the man so angry that he would hurt the women worse or possibly kill her.

No. I know this is a big shocker here, so brace yourselves--not all women are nice people. This device could be used purposely to harm someone during consensual sex.

Edit: well, those giving me thumbs down either think I am wrong, and all women are angels who would never do such a thing--or, they think I am right, but that a pissed off girl should have the right to do this to some unsuspecting guy.

yes i truly would buy this product. especially in these times. men are willingly gonna rape u. i would defeinly buy some , when u go to a date especially late at night. and that nice guy might be ur rapist.

No woman is going to wear this crap 24/7. This doesn't prevent rape it just causes more problems. Now the emergency room is going to be full of all these guys with these things on there dick. Our health system is not in a position to deal with these extra problems. If you get into a position like this sometimes the best thing for a woman to do is just go along with the guy and do what he says becuz your life is important. Agravating him is just going to get you more hurt. You can't live in fear. What if the girl accidently left it in and she had intercourse with someone who she had consented with? This is just going to cause more problems and this method is not the answer!

Other than that, i think this is a very great product and that every woman should atleast have one on hand for that time she feels she isnt "safe".

The idea in itself is rather.... smart; for lack of a better word; but I feel like it's inhumane. I know that rape is a terrible deed and all, but it justs doesn't seem right to me.

That is a really neat idea and women wouldn't be "forced" to do anything. If a man has the audacity to attempt to rape a woman he'll get what he deserves so I don't wanna hear anything about it being cruel or unfair to men. But I don't know if this would save her life as in when the man is in pain he may become violent and kill the woman anyway. Makes me wonder if rape really could be prevented or if once the RapeX became common knowledge would rapists merely figure out a way around it? Oh and also wearing this thing for long amounts of time, could it possibly be harmful? I mean it would certainly reduce airflow and could open you up to infection.

I completely agree with you on the pros and cons and also if the man did try to rape a woman the proof to be put in jail is right there. But the bad part maybe is if she forgets to take it out and decides to have sex with her man and yeah ouch for him.
