Addiction to melatonin? |
Does anyone know if its possible to be addicted to melatonin (sleep aid)? or if there are consequences for long term use? I have been taking it every day for 4-5 years and can't find a lot of useful information on this, also don't really want to ask my dr. I take melatonin as well to sleep. I have not had any problems with it or found that I am addicted to it. Because melatonin is natually made in your body I do not believe that there are any long term consequences to using it for long periods of time or that there are any side effects to long term use. Melatonin is naturally occurring in the body, so bodies are what regulate it. Giving it more will increase how much your body naturally thinks it needs. It says on the label (if I remember correctly) that it's good for jet lag and short term use. Usually this means just that- it should be used short term. Bodies are very sensitive when we give them naturally occurring supplements, and so addiction is easy. Sleep aids in general are usually very addicting. I took Melatonin after a trip to Las Vegas and a red eye flight and couldn't get to sleep without it after a few weeks. I assumed it was a slight addiction, and so I'm assuming that you have a pretty bad addiction. Melatonin is a health food supplement. It is not a narcotic-it is non-addictive. I would imagine like anything, your body can build up a tolerance it. I have been taking it for years and can go a night or so without it. Talk to your Dr.-it's not really a big deal. Maybe you have a mental addiction to it. |
