FAFSA and income taxes question.?

I hear all the time that for financial aid for the following year, the FAFSA is available to be filled out in January of that year.

Now with that info, I'm sure mom won't be able to file her taxes on Jan. 1st or any date near the new year.

I think someone told me that you can use last years taxes on the FAFSA, does anyone know if that's true?

Personally, I wouldn't do it Jan 1st using estimated income (from the previous year or otherwise). This info is incorrect and will eventually have to be corrected. Why do it twice when you don't need to? Make sure your folks do their taxes by Valentines day and you should meet all state deadlines. But you should check with your school to see if they have an earlier deadline. Your parents won't get their W-2 forms until Jan 31st anyway.

Since 2008 tax income cannot be filed for Jan. (only in April) you have to use your mom's previous tax income (2007) and estimate tax income for 2008
