What is the earliest day to file income tax?

I'm also trying to apply for student financial aid as soon as possible. The earliest they accept applications is Jan1 and deadline is march 15. When is the earliest to file income tax for 2008? I'm asking because in 2007, my family made about 1.8k over the bracket for full tuition qualifications(30k) and in 2008, my family's income is lower, which qualifies me for full tuition at my prospective university. How long would it take to file the new one and get that packet of tax return information? Would I be able to use the 2008 income tax information rather than the 2007 for filling my fafsa? it looks as if 1/9/09 will be the earliest day to file for 2008.hopefully u will have a w2 by then because without a w2 u are unable to file until 2/15/09.

You are stuck with your 2007-based school aid for the rest of this school year. You will fill out a new fafsa based on yours and your parent's 2008 tax returns. No matter how early you file taxes and then fill out the fafsa, nothing changes until the new school year that starts next September.

Generally you file FAFSA now with 2007 info, or estimated 2008 info, then amend it.
Earliest efile date is about January 9 or 10th, although officially it is 1/17 right now.

Your parents can't really file until they get their W-2s and other info. This may be the beginning of February. After the IRS gets the return, allow at least another 3 weeks.
