Does getting married for financial aid help?

Oh I have a huge problem. At the age of 14, I had tried to get emancipated from my parents due to home issues with my mother and grandmother. Unfortunately, in the state of Wisconsin, they wont let children get emancipated from their parents. As a result, i was rejected, and ran away from home. I was unclaimed on taxes for 3 years before my sister whom I recently found, decided to claim me on her taxes. With that having to be said I am now 17, and getting ready for college. However, I am still considered a dependent and so I need my mother and father's stuff to complete my FAFSA forms. I wanted to use my sister's information but she refuses as well, stating she didn't want to get into any legal problems with my parents. I do still keep in contact with my parents and so when i asked them for the forms they refused to give them to me, trying to justify the situation as "NO you left home and now we are NOT going to help you. Ask your sister." Currently I am dating a man for the last three and a half years, and i was wondering, if i marry him, i know i can be claimed as an independent, but WILL HIS INCOME and my income be put together? I turn 18 on March 30 and we plan to marry when i turn 18, and so i was wondering if i claim i am married, will they use his income and papers last year even though we weren't married last year AND do i still need to use my parent's income and signture before i wasn't married the year before. Also, can i fill out for fincial aid still if we get married in March?

I need some help. i was on my own for years!!!
and no one is making an exception for me to go to COLLEGE.

They best way to get ANY financial aid form any tech school. college or university is to beat down the financial aid door.....literally. Visiting the financial of your chosen school really tells them..."This student is ultra motivated...." Visiting the school more than once gets the ball in your corner. Best of luck!

Put 3 kids through college this way..........it works!

i dont think they will consider his income for fafsa forms. Since they base it on last years earning, you werent married at the time. But marrying him will remove you from being a dependent w/anyone else. But like the previous post said, contact fafsa and see what they have to say. Your probaly not the first case like this for them.

yes, your income will be put together if you get married. when you're 18, you can claim independently with out being married.

Not if you make over 40k are yr combined with your man.

You'll have to get these detailed questions answer by the financial aid dept, but I did exactly the same thing. The guy I married had very little income, they no longer cared about my parent's income, and I was able to get grants and loans for the next 8 years, finish medical school with a small debt I paid off before finishing residency training. The marriage wasn't so great, but it did the job for financial aid.

His income will count, and how much he makes (or doesn't make) could mean a big difference in what you qualify for.

I know a couple of people who delayed getting married for this reason alone.

Also, if you get married and he is working but you are not, you will not technically be independent, you will be your husband's dependent. And the financial aid people will still require the forms from your parents regarding the the time before you married because you were a minor then (I also know someone who went through a similar scenario to you, but luckily her parents signed the forms for her).

Another girl I know moved out on her own at 18, stayed single, and worked all that year so that she could qualify for financial aid a year later. She did this because the financial aid officer told her that in her situation, that was the only way she could- if she had been independent for the previous year and filed her own taxes, with no one else being able to claim her. This sounds like the position you are in.

For the fafsa your marital status is determined the DAY you signed the fafsa form. So keep that in mind. Also you can't go back and "correct" marital status because this is a static thing... even if you get married the day after you fill out the fafsa the school or you can't go back and change your marital status.

If you are married the day you fill out the form you would include your new hubby's income even if you didn't file taxes together the previous year and even if you weren't married last year.

If you fill out the fafsa form now, (not married) you would need your parents income. This info would be used for the entire academic year.
