Shoplifting in NJ...consequences?

My 18 yrs old nephew got caught shoplifting at sears NJ (7 dollars) today. He got a summon to appear in court in a week. I have no idea what will happen next and what should our next move be....

I am also worried that how will this affect his college/his fianancial aid eligibility/and student loan.

any has been through similiar situation? or has any info about such matters? what should we expect in court? plz let me know. i am worried sick.
