I'm a full time student, single mom, on Soc. Security, do I have to file taxes.?

I'm a single mom receiving survivor benefits from Soc. Sec. and I have been a full time student this past year receiving loans, grants, scholarships, etc and did not work. Do I file taxes, do I still receive the earned income credit and do I need to file so that I can put the info on my financial aid papers for next year at school?

If you don't have taxable income (implied from question), you don't need to file. However, it might be best to file anyway, for a possible credit or at least a financial record.

You only get the earned income credit if you had earned income from a job. But, you might get stimulus payments, and in some cases your social security benefits might be taxable (generally if you get more than $2,000 a month). File the form anyway, so you have documentation for financial aid.

Everyone is legally required to file a tax return.
