Why does fafsa need my parents social security number?

can someone please go into detail on why they need it? so i can explain to them why FAFSA requests their info.

If and ONLY if you are 23 years of age or younger, FAFSA needs your parents' social to verify their income with the IRS. Unfortunately, even if you didn't live with your parents and you are 23 or younger, they require any parent who has custody of you or who is responsible for supporting you, to provide their income, which is a factor in the amount of financial aid you are awarded.

The government does this becuase they need to check if you are lieing or not, If your parents make alot of money they don't want to be giving aid to someone that doesn't need it
