its suppose to be a compare and contrast essay!
J. Gaarder and L. Lowry have both written a book that appears to be very diverse from distance; however, when inspected closely, they (鈥淭he Giver鈥?and 鈥淪ophie鈥檚 World鈥? are very similar. They are amongst the two very powerful and insightful novels that I have read throughout my course of high school. They both teach the audience how it is important to have freedom and know who you are. Within both of these books there are many similarities however, the main resemblances are that the main characters in both of the books live in an abnormal and controlled world, and throughout the book, both the characters gain awareness and understanding about themselves and their world.
The book, Sophie鈥檚 World, by Jostein Gaarder is about a regular, 14 year old teenager, living in Norway. Like many of us, Sophie鈥檚 lives an ordinary life, however, one day after school, Sophie finds two anonymous notes in her mailbox (鈥淲ho are you?鈥?and 鈥淲here does the world come from?鈥?, as well as a post card addressed to 鈥淗ilde Moller Knag, c/o Sophie Amundsen.鈥?From that day forward, Sophie starts to receive packets of paper in a brown enveloped written 鈥淐ourse in philosophy. Handle with care.鈥? Through this mysterious package, Sophie becomes the student of a philosopher, Alberto Knox. In the beginning of the book it not reveled from whom the package is from, but as the story unfold we learn that the package is from someone named Alberto Knox. However, the postcard is not; it is sent from a man named Albert Kang, who is Hilde father. Through the philosophy lessons that Sophie receives, she begins to learn more about the world and where it comes from. As, the story continues, Albert Knag, who appears to have god given powers, starts to meddle in her life. He knows everything about Sophie, for example her feelings and thoughts. Suddenly, the book takes a turn in the middle, where it is the character Hilde鈥檚 point of view. She is reading a book titled, Sophie鈥檚 World, written by her father, that she had been given for her birthday. Sophie and Alberto are merely characters existing within the world of the gift book. Eventually, with the knowledge that Sophie gains through her philosophy lessons, she and Alberto Knox her manage to escape from the imaginary world controlled by Albert Kang.
Likewise, the book, 鈥淭he Giver鈥?by Lois Lowry is about a 12 year old boy named Jonas who lives in a perfect community. His society has developed a plan called 鈥渟ameness鈥?where everyone is the same. There is no color or war or emotions. At the age of 12, every person is assigned a role or a career. Jonas is selected to be the 鈥淩eceiver of memories鈥? He is going to store all the memories of the time before Sameness, incase a situation come forward where they need the aid of the old memories. Jonas begins to learn about the world from the memories that he receives from the pervious receiver, The Giver. As Jonas learns more about his society, he realizes that he is living in a very controlled world, where no one has any choices. He felt like we could not live in his community anymore knowing that he was a prisoner: 鈥淚f he stayed, his life was no longer worth living.鈥?Therefore, Jonas and The Giver, make a plan for Jonas to escape from their community. Using the memories and knowledge, Jonas gained about himself and the world, he breaks free.
It is clearly evident that, both in 鈥淪ophie鈥檚 World鈥?and 鈥淭he Giver鈥? the main characters live in a world that is powered by someone else. Sophie鈥檚 world is dominated by Albert Kang; he is her creator. He controls her activities and actions. Similarly, the plan Sameness governs Jonas world. He is not allowed to choose his own career, have feelings or any choice. In both 鈥淪ophie World鈥?and 鈥淭he Giver鈥? the main characters use the knowledge they gained from their 鈥渢eacher鈥? to escape and make a better life for themselves. Sophie uses the information that was taught to her by Alberto Knox and Jonas uses the memories that he was given by The Giver.
鈥淪ophie World鈥?and 鈥淭he Giver鈥?both have similar themes about knowing who you are and not following everything obliviously. The characters of both the story learn much about themselves and their world. Josteen Gaarder and Lois Lowry did a fantastic job of writing a book that has themes that are alike. In the line:
"He is going to store all the memories of the time before Sameness,"
then put a space between "in" and "case".
And that would be "a situation comes forward" adding an "s" to "come".
In the line:
"Jonas begins to learn about the world from the memories that he receives from the..."
It would be "previous" not "pervious".
In the line:
"Similarly, the plan.."
I believe "Sameness" should be in quotes when used that way and "Jonas" should be "Jonas's"
And the line:
"The characters of both the..."
It should be "stories" instead of "story".
