How can I show a comparison of population increase/decrease without the use of a chart?

I am trying to show the population increase/decrease during the Great Depression, but I don't have enough information to create a chart in excel. Is there a way to show an example of an increase of teenage hobos of 250,000 without using a chart?
Is there another type of comparison I can use for a visual aid?

just use words.
