If my parents don't file taxes can I still receive/be eligible for FAFSA?

My parents don't file taxes and I am in desperate need of scholarships/financial aid to pay for school.

Does anyone know if i can still file a FAFSA and possibly receive money from the government/scholarship givers even though my parents don't file taxes.

I have a part time job, does anyone know if i could maybe put myself as independent from my parents and only have to show my tax information which is up to date as far as i know.

without FAFSA, i cannot apply for any loans, scholarships, or financial aid so I am very frustrated with my situation because I don't have any money to pay for my schooling.

Please help :(

universities.atwebpages.com - try this site. It has info about different US scholarships for college students and their grades requirements.

every scholarship requires me to have the FAFSA filled out so i cant do that

my parents don't do taxes because they choose not to
because taxes on business owners are really high and since the economy is so bad they don't have the money to pay them. they make alot but have alot to pay off monthly Report Abuse

You cannot fill the FAFSA out as independent just because you want to. You are only considered independent if: you are 24, married, have a child, in the army, are legally emancipated from your parents, or already have a bachelor's degree.

If your parents don't file taxes because they don't make enough money to be required to then you can still fill out the FAFSA. If they are legally required to file and are not, then no you cannot and attempting to do so will send up all sorts of red flags and get your parents in trouble.

Unfortunately, there is little that you can do if that is the case except attempt to persuade your parents to get themselves up to date with their taxes. Your only other option is to wait until you are 24 to go to school.
