Im going backpacking for this first time alone this summer I have a few questions before I go:?

I'm, going to be hiking the T105 trail or the Rim south of slide campground in the Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico for the experience this summer. Its about 30 miles of trail and I'll be alone. I've had experience hiking long distances before just never over night.
I'll be going for sure after July 4th

So my two main concerns are the fact that I will be alone, and I've never been to the Lincoln National Forest at this time so I don't know what to expect during the summer months.

I don't know if any of you have ever been on the trail if you have PLEASE be detailed, If you haven't and are just experienced backpackers please tell me all the tips you know about that could help me.

I have a fishing license and I know how to prepare a fish if I catch one. I think there are streams along the trail at some areas but are there?
Im not depending on fish to eat I'll bring about 2000 calories per day and water, iodine drops, first aid kit, small fishing pole, sleepingbag, good shoes, a swiss knife and a hat and besides my clothes I think thats it.
Are there snakes around there? Should I bring a snake bite kit?
Are these supplies advisable? Anything else I should add?
Should I bring a heavy warm sleeping bag or a light less warm one?
Whats the weather during the summer like? Is there lots of shade on the trail? How about the wildlife? The bears especially?

Here's the main link where I've gotten all of my information - http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/lincoln/recreati...

If you click on the Sacramento Ranger District that's where the Rim trail is listed.

When I get there I'm going to let the office know that I'm going backpacking the trail and that I'll be done in about 4 days.

If I find out all of these things will I have been thorough enough in my preparation?

Thanks everybody for taking the time to help me out =)

You have a lot more homework to do. I get the impression that you are not familiar with the area at all. You state it is your first overnight trip. Hiking long distances on day hikes will be useful, but, it does not qualify you to backpack by yourself on your first backpacking trip.

At the end of the you are going to have to do a lot of things you are not used to and you have to do it by yourself. Staying overnight one night is a lot different than doing it for 3 nights. I think it is a dangerous outing and you should reconsider going it alone, primarily because it is your first trip.

However, if you are determined to do it please do some more homework.

Contact the ranger at the ranger station and get as much local information as you can. Find out about the weather, how cold it gets at night and how hot it gets in the day. Don't think there are streams in the area, find out! Ask about tricky areas on the trail.

Get a good weather forecast and do it again just before you head out.

2,000 calories per day is not going to get it done. Plan on 5,000 to 6,000 with plenty of carbs.

Carry all synthetic clothing. Leave your cotton at home. It is useless when it gets wet and weighs a ton.

You make no mention of a tent or bivy. I would recommend an ultralight one-person tent, Many of the models available today don't weigh much more than a bivy and it might keep a snake from curling up beside you to keep warm during the night.

You will likely need rain gear and a fleece sweater.

You didn't mention it, but I think you might want to carry a map and a compass. I assume you are proficient in this area.

I have been on several solo trips and they can be very rewarding. Your trip is the king of outing I really love. It will be challenging and exciting. I just don't think your first overnight trip should be solo.

Visit my website (below), read everything there. If you have any questions email me. If you are not proficient with map and compass, email me.

not good to go alone but there are snakes snake bite kits dont really do anything by the time u are bit the venom is already flowing through ur veins they might help get some of the poison out of the muscle thats it and all it is is a suction device so dont get bit ive never been there but i know there are diamondbacks i would bring a second pair of shoes lightweight i have had mine tear up hiking and had to change as far as sleeping i like to carry a pair of thermals and thick socks just incase i was out one night was in the very warm here and had a big thunderstorm come through dropped dime size hail every where it did not melt till the next morning went from mid to upper 80s to i dont know cold did not sleep much that night im used to camping in alabama so i know its a little diff there but i have camped in almost all kinds of weather even an ice storm that i knew was coming that was a good weekend but was prepared hope this helps u some u can im me or email if u have more questions

don't let anyone tell you not to go alone. i'm a 5'2", really young person, and i'm going to be backpacking all over the west coast all summer, completely solo. and i'm **** scared of bears and serial killers and flat bike tires, but i have bear spray, a knife, and can hitchhike. watch out for snakes. check on this, but i've heard snake kits are nearly useless. if you get bit, don't run, the poison will pump faster. stay calm. whistle really loud. get yourself out of there. just really watch where you step though. there hasn't been a bear attack in new mexico for a long time.
before you go, look at a topographical map (bring one too), so you can assure yourself there are enough streams to refill your canteen. iodine is fine, but a water filter is better.
and a final word of advice, don't worry about the gear and preparation as much as you are concerned about taking the first real step out of the door. like, gear and knowledge and stuff are all inanimate objects, accessories, and it really drags me down when i obsess. go when you feel you are prepared ENOUGH, and just count on the trip to teach you everything else.
check if you are in alpine conditions (snow until mid july). if not, a light sleeping bag is probably fine. and remember there will probably be at least a couple other hikers, so if you get in serious trouble....
have fun.

The only advice i can give as an experienced backpacker is to take someone with you. It is never a good idea to go it alone.

If you take someone with you not only do you have someone to share the experience with, the added safety of a hiking partner is immeasurable.

Don't go by yourself man.

Hikers burn 4000-6000 calories a day. Pack plenty of carbs and high fat food. About 1.5 to 2 pounds per day of food is sufficient. Snack constantly to keep your strength up. Search the net for GORP. Or check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_mix

Remember cotton will freeze you to death (sometimes literally) if it gets wet, so wear poly clothes. The same applies to a sleeping bag, go with synthetics.

It is wise to swing by or call a ranger station the day before to get latest info on the trail ahead. rangers would love to talk with you, offer advice, and review your gear to make sure you will be well prepared for the trip.

It is also wise to use the buddy system, or at least leave your info with a TRUSTED/RELIABLE friend who can send help if you don't return on time. Just remember to check in when you return instead of flopping on the couch and taking an exhausted nap right thru the deadline... lol Remember to plan for the best, and pack for the worst. Have fun!
