Adult autism benefits/aid from the government?

My boyfriend's brother was diagnosed with autism as a young child, and his mother had taken care of him until 3 years ago when she passed away. He is high functioning and works, but still needs care, which the oldest sibling of the family has been doing. Unfortunately, she will be moving across the country with her husband soon, and my boyfriend and I can't house him as we are also 3 states away. He wants to stay where he is living on his own, but makes minimum wage, and can't grasp the idea's of how to budget money etc. I tried to find some information from the net on what our government offers as far as assistance to families who house and aid people with adult autism or for the individuals themselves. Anyone have any idea where I can get information on that here in the states? Thanks!

it's not a matter of not stepping up, it is that he wants to live and function on his own as an adult, but cannot afford it.

it sounds liek you are in the US

he shoudl have been registered with his state division of developmental disabilities (DDD) a long time ago.

tehy have various levels of support form fully supervised group homes to on call counsleors who meet with the person as needed for help with things like budgeting

can he afford where he is living now?

if not he needs to get on teh Section 8 housing list which is only open to new applicants on occasion..some states give priority to people with disabilities

both DDD and section 8 have long waiting list--could be more tahn 10 years.

if need be --he is also eligible for services from Vocational Rehab --if he shoudl have to temporarily move to be with a sibling --and need to get a new job

you can send him to a group home. since it is obvious no one in your family is willing to step up and take responsibility.
