Financial Aid Question for application?

My school is not helping AT ALL!

Ok, so we have a friend of mine that is living at my house because her mother is a really abusive lady. She is crazy and always verbally abuses her and so i told my parents and they let her live with us. She has been at my house almost a year and when we were applying for financial aid when it came to the parents part, we wanted to enter my parents information because she's been living with us and my parents have been supporting her with no help from her mother.

So we dont know what to do.

I asked one of our financial aid representatives and they said to asnwer question #56

but it talks about being emancipated by court.

can someone help me? please this is urgent

My parents dont want me to enter any false information but there isnt a way to state that she isnt living or is getting money from her mom.

What the financial aid office is saying (in not as many words), is that unless your friend has been legally emancipated (with lawyers and a judge and has the court papers to prove it) from her parents, then she still is required to list her parents information on her fafsa.

If she has been emancipated, then she should not list your parents or her own parents income information on her fafsa. As an emancipated minor, she is considered independent.
She would not include you or your parents in her household. Only herself and others she supports. Which is not likely unless she has a child.

She can not (and your parents should not) list your parents income information on her fafsa either way... independent or independent. Only adopted parents, bio parents and step parents allowed.

Fafsa has some crappy rules, but you have to play by them. ANYONE under 24 and unmarried (unless emancipated) has to list parental income. You have to be accurate as well because it would be like cheating on your taxes, they can fine you for that. If they won't give the info there is really nothing you can do except get emancipation from the courts (meaning her parents have no legal ties to her).

Unless your parents are legal guardians of her then I don't think there is much you can do.
