My mom is totally deaf? Is there any Hearing Aid for Such total Loss? Is there any operation possible?

My mom is 70+ now, She lost her hearing ability since 18th age (no information for 'why'). She was using hearing aid during 20-25. I do not know how much it was useful/efficient that time. Now I wanted to go for a hearing aid for her. Is there any latest medical surgery available to correct her deafness. Please suggest.

Have your mom go to an audiologist and have an audiogram and whatever other tests are needed. There's a device called a cochlear implant that can pretty much cure deafness, but it's very expensive.

Go to an audiologist and get a full hearing test done. You will need to see what kind of loss it is (conductive, sensorineural, or mixed) and how severe it is (slight to profound). Depending on these factors, your audiologist will know the best route.

Only if your mom is profoundly deaf and the loss is due to damage in the cochlea, will the cochlear implant option even be close to the table. That's because the implant bypasses the cochlea. If there is other damage causing the loss, then there's no point in getting the implant. The cochlear implant is very expensive, and it requires batteries of different testing, surgery, and auditory therapy afterward. And even then the sound won't be as clear as it is for hearing people. They also go through hearing aid batteries like crazy. At your mother's age, it will depend on her willingness to go through all of the requirements. Remember there is no magic bullet for curing deafness.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Adults who have lost all or most of their hearing later in life often can benefit from cochlear implants. They learn to associate the signal provided by an implant with sounds they remember. This often provides recipients with the ability to understand speech solely by listening through the implant, without requiring any visual cues such as those provided by lipreading or sign language.

Cochlear implants, coupled with intensive postimplantation therapy, can help young children to acquire speech, language, and social skills. Most children who receive implants are between two and six years old. Early implantation provides exposure to sounds that can be helpful during the critical period when children learn speech and language skills. In 2000, the FDA lowered the age of eligibility to 12 months for one type of cochlear implant.

First thing that you need to do is get your mom a hearing test. I wouldn't buy any hearing aid without a hearing test done first. Buying an aid without any testing is a big waste of money and hearing aids are not cheap. The can run from 700 hundred dollars to over 3 thousand just for one. There is surgery for people that are deaf or severely hard of hearing but that is also very costly and take several months of testing to know if the surgery is right for the patient. Plus does your mom want to hear again? I wouldn't force an aid or surgery on her if she isn't willing to adjust to what both would take to hear again.

Hi! Cna't you get her some sort of hearing aid. My mom's deaf to and we have a hearing thing- but i don't know what its called! sorry. go to her doctor and ask. they will definlty know a place!
