Are there really Obama supporters who have not looked into what the stimulus package contains?

$1 billion for Amtrak, which hasn鈥檛 earned a profit in four decades.


$2 billion to help subsidize child care.


$400 million for research into global warming.


$2.4 billion for projects to demonstrate how carbon greenhouse gas can be safely removed from the atmosphere.


$650 million for coupons to help consumers convert their TV sets from analog to digital, part of the digital TV conversion.


$600 million to buy a new fleet of cars for federal employees and government departments.


$75 million to fund programs to help people quit smoking.


$21 million to re-sod the National Mall, which suffered heavy use during the Inauguration.


$2.25 billion for national parks. This item has sparked calls for an investigation, because the chief lobbyist of the National Parks Association is the son of Rep. David R. Obey, D-Wisc. The $2,25 billion is about equal to the National Park Service鈥檚 entire annual budget. The Washington Times reports it is a threefold increase over what was originally proposed for parks in the stimulus bill. Obey is chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.


$335 million for treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.


$50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts. $4.19 billion to stave off foreclosures via the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The bill allows nonprofits to compete with cities and states for $3.44 billion of the money, which means a substantial amount of it will be captured by ACORN, the controversial activist group currently under federal investigation for vote fraud. Another $750 million would be exclusively reserved for nonprofits such as ACORN 鈥?meaning cities and states are barred from receiving that money. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., charges the money could appear to be a 鈥減ayoff鈥?for the partisan political activities community groups in the last election cycle.


$44 million to renovate the headquarters building of the Agriculture Department.


$32 billion for a 鈥渟mart electricity grid to minimize waste.


$87 billion of Medicaid funds, to aid states.


$53.4 billion for science facilities, high speed Internet, and miscellaneous energy and environmental programs.


$13 billion to repair and weatherize public housing, help the homeless, repair foreclosed homes.


$20 billion for quicker depreciation and write-offs for equipment.


$10.3 billion for tax credits to help families defray the cost of college tuition.


$20 billion over five years for an expanded food stamp program.

There is also $877 MILLION dollars to study the BIRD FLU! Are you worried about that too!

Here's the problem. You are assuming that the average liberal would be against this spending if they had read the bill. Since most of these are liberal pet causes they don't care. I have read the bill and CBO estimate and the extent of pork is just staggering. However what is more disturbing is that none of this will help the economy in the short term. This is pork spending bill plain and simple.

STEPH W: It isn't Republicans out there screaming we have to have this bill now or the economy will fail very soon. I believe that would be Obama, Pelosi and Reid. Best estimates show that the economic actions of this bill would not take effect until 2010 and then would be catastrophic to the economy based on increased debt load it would create long term. Republicans may be thinking short term, but Democrats are short sighted.

You didn't look it up. You pulled it off of a blog, probably without verifying that it was accurate.

Congress routinely passes omnibus bills. Some of what the republicans are calling pork are measures required by statute. Congress has to address and fund those measures anyway which is why they are being included in this bill.

Interesting information, but your numbers only add up to about 234 billion, only about 1/4 of the package. I have a feeling you omitted a lot of the more useful items. Clever trick, but it makes you a partisan hack. Sorry.

The real issue is that no matter what he says and does the Obama supporters will stand behind him. Its how he got elected in the first place so this is no surprise that they support him because of their pure ignorance towards the truth.

It is handouts for Obama's buddies and favors owed to special interests, all paid for by the taxpayers: you and me.

The Congressional Budget Office says this bill will damage the US economy in the long term.

They only know what Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman tell them, and those guys conveniently omit A LOT of information

Yeah, I am pretty happy with most of those....some you mentioned I didn't read ANYWHERE in the bill...so providing a source might be helpful. Such as the bird flu...where is that in the package?? I think you are forgetting that most of this has been removed from the bill....like the resodding...that was removed from the bill over a week ago. Obama demanded that it be taken out.

Wall Street Journal estimated that only 12% of this bill will actually stimulate the economy.

Obama doesn't want you to actually study the spending bill. That's why he keeps crying that it needs to be passed NOW!

They need to cut out all the above mentioned wasted spending, and add more tax cuts for everybody.

Obama supporters have sense enough to KNOW what's in the plan rather than take someones word. We don't need you to tell us what's in it. We helped create it. (only true Obama supporters know what I mean by that)

I'm not exactly a huge Obama fan, and you've honestly just succeeded in showing me one or two things that may actually be worthwhile with this list. I didn't know there was anything decent on there until now.

I guess I'm trying to say that what you think is a waste might not seem like waste to everyone. I'll agree with you on the overwhelming majority. . . but we could *really* use some funding over here on some of these science-type enterprises where I work. The sad part is that it's probably not really going to get to us -- these things seem to get siphoned off for political purposes before they get to where they're needed.
