Do you believe condoms can reduce the AIDS risk?

BOSTON (LifeSiteNews.com) - Edward C. Green, director of the AIDS Prevention Research Project at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies, has said that the evidence confirms that the Pope is correct in his assessment that condom distribution exacerbates the problem of AIDS.

"The pope is correct," Green told National Review Online Wednesday, "or put it a better way, the best evidence we have supports the pope's comments."

"There is," Green added, "a consistent association shown by our best studies, including the U.S.-funded 'Demographic Health Surveys,' between greater availability and use of condoms and higher (not lower) HIV-infection rates. This may be due in part to a phenomenon known as risk compensation, meaning that when one uses a risk-reduction 'technology' such as condoms, one often loses the benefit (reduction in risk) by 'compensating' or taking greater chances than one would take without the risk-reduction technology." ( see the full interview with Green here: http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=MTN... )

Yes, I think if used properly and consistently they greatly reduce HIV transmission.

Complete garbage. People are going to have sex anyway and condoms reduce the risk. Condoms reduce the risk of easier to catch STDs and AIDS is not as easy to transfer - it is logical that condoms reduce the risk of transfer of a less transferable disease.

Naturally, complete abstention reduces the risk most, but this is separate to the use of condoms and to link both together like this is not helpful and is misleading. It is like saying that low calorie foods don't reduce the risk of obesity because people can still overeat - obvious but misdirecting.

Should I stop breathing in order to eradicate the risk of lung cancer?

I clicked yohan's link. It ws broken. No article. I did, thanks to a quick Google search, find a radio interview with Mr Edward C. Green in which he explicitly states that the prevention of AIDS in Uganda is thanks primarily to - wait for it - CONDOM USE.

Methinks Mr Yohan has been quote mining.

I think it means that using a condom means you are having sex, and obviously not having sex reduces the risk to aids, so not using condoms (by failed logic) reduces the risk.
Thats besides the point.. things like this are full of crap and dangerous

i think condoms are more for stoping pregnancy than stoping aids or any Other std if you are a male you get girl goo allover your junk any way so contact is made
and contact is all you need with sum std and shaving leaves open wounds witch means you will get it if it gets in the wounds

The simple fact is that if you have sex with a person who has AIDS, wearing a condom seriously reduces the risk to contract AIDS.

Deal with it.

Let me ask you a question, if you were forced to have sex with a aids infected person and were given the choice of using a condom or not...what would you choose?

Strange that, they have had a remarkable effect in Thailand perhaps it is down to people, americans are known to be pretty dense

Abstinence works better obviously. I do see why people feel condoms prevent AIDS when two people are going to have sex despite the risk.

yes it is but i belive this if u think wrong relation are harmfull, there will be no any need of using these things,so stop un necessary sexual relation.

no, it's because nobody teaches people how to put the condoms on right.

thank you abstinence-only sex education.

Condoms can reduce anything from AIDS/HIV to pregnancy.

But getting tested for AIDS/HIV is good too.......

The Pope is full of poop on this one.

Condoms DO REDUCE the risk of AIDS and other diseases.

I'm Christian.

Yes, condoms should be used all the time and every time we engage in casual sex dear...

No, I don't. Because I'm an IDIOT of the highest order.

And your right-wing little source isn't worth crap, you know.

with wife no risk no condom

Condoms do reduce the risk of getting AIDS. People will still be having sex if they werent used, and therefore more people with the disease. The reasons why AIDS has increased is due too many other reasons that also come into play. When they estimated the number of people that have AIDS every couple of years, they include in their study parts of africa where children born with HIV are included in the study. Moreover, the population has increased greatly, so theres bound to be more people with the disease.

I love how studies can be manipulated to suit each person's belief

i mean seriously, people will stop having sex and "taking risks" if it werent for condoms??? Thus reducing the number of people infected with AIDS??? There are like 6 billion people on the earth...they didnt appear by cloning :S

The pope is correct from an idealistic point of view. The pope says that nobody should have sexual relations outside of marriage under any circumstances and also that married people should not have sexual relations if one of them has AIDs. The problem is with this attitude is obvious. Humans don't live this way. We're not built to live like that. Even the pope's own priests, sworn to lifelong celibacy frequently break the vow.

Apply the pope's reasoning to automobiles and we would disconnect the airbags and throw out the seat belts. By the pope's logic these things are ineffective. People use them and sometimes get hurt or killed anyway. The pope's view on condoms is that they somethimes fail to prevent disease therefore they should never be used. Does that make sense? Does the pope wear a seatbelt when he travels by car? Using the pope's logic seatbelts could give a false sense of security and result in careless driving and more accidents & injuries. By the pope's logic seat belts and airbags only make things worse. The pope's solution would be for people to stop driving or riding in vehicles.

For the pope to go African countries where AIDs is rampant and speak against condom use is like going somewhere with a high rate of auto accident deaths and speak against airbags and seat belts. Frankly, the pope doesn't live in the real world.

Much attention has focused on controlling HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, through the use of condoms. However, as many STDs can be transmitted through other activities, some sex educators recommend that barrier protection be used for all sexual activities which have the potential for disease transmission, such as manual penetration of the anal or vaginal cavities, or oral stimulation of the genitals.

Sex by yourself

Known as autoeroticism, solitary sexual activity is relatively safe. Masturbation, the simple act of stimulating one's own genitalia, is safe so long as contact is not made with other people's discharged bodily fluids. However, some practices, such as self-bondage and autoerotic asphyxia, are made considerably more dangerous by the absence of people who can intervene if something goes wrong.

Modern technology does permit some activities, such as "phone sex" and "cybersex", that allow for partners to engage in sexual activity without being in the same room, eliminating the risks involved with exchanging bodily fluids.

A range of sex acts, sometimes called "outercourse", can be enjoyed by lovers with significantly reduced risks of infection and pregnancy. U.S. President Bill Clinton's surgeon general, Dr. Joycelyn Elders, tried to encourage the use of these practices among young people, but her position encountered opposition from a number of outlets, including the White House itself, and resulted in her being fired by President Clinton in December of 1994.[1][2][3]

Various devices are used to avoid contact with blood, vaginal fluid, and semen during sexual activity:

* Condoms cover the penis during sexual activity. They are most frequently made of latex, but can also be made out of polyurethane. Polyurethane is thought to be a safe material for use in condoms, since it is nonporous and viruses cannot pass through it. However, there is less research on its effectiveness than there is on latex.
* Female condoms are inserted into the vagina prior to intercourse. They may also be used for anal sex, although they are less effective.
* A dental dam (originally used in dentistry) is a sheet of latex used for protection when engaging in oral sex. It is typically used as a barrier between the mouth and the vulva during cunnilingus or between the mouth and the anus during anilingus.
* Medical gloves made out of latex, vinyl, nitrile, or polyurethane may be used as an makeshift dental dam during oral sex, or to protect the hands during mutual masturbation. Hands may have invisible cuts on them that may admit pathogens that are found in the semen or the vaginal fluids of STD infectees. Although the risk of infection in this manner is thought to be low[citation needed], gloves can be used as an extra precaution.
* Another way to avoid contact with blood and semen is penetration, but not by the penis, such as using (properly cleaned) dildos or other sex toys. If a sex toy is to be used in more than one orifice, a condom can be used over it and changed when the toy is moved. Fisting (penetration by the hand), has its own risks, but the risk of HIV transfer can be reduced by latex gloves or a condom. Pegging, female-to-male anal sex with a strap-on dildo, as promoted by sex educator Carol Queen does not involve fluid transfer.

If a latex barrier is being used, any lubrication must not be oil based, as this can break down the structure of the latex and undo the protection it gives.

Condoms (male or female) may be used along with other forms of contraception to protect against STDs and improve contraceptive effectiveness. For example, simultaneously using both the male condom and spermicide (applied separately, not pre-lubricated) is believed to reduce perfect-use pregnancy rates to those seen among implant users.[4] However, two condoms should not be used simultaneously (male condom on top of male condom, or male condom inside female condom), since this increases the chance of condom failure.[5][6]
