How do we get the Vatican to rethink it's position on Aids & condom use for prevention?

Would it be useful to set up a petition online to send a powerful message to the Pope that his policy of hindering the distribution of condoms is killing millions of people in Africa and leaving many more millions of orphaned children?

Condoms are presently the only known protective measure against Aids apart from total abstinence which is not much help to sexually active people. Saving lives should be first priority ..convert people should come second.

I wouldn't have a whole lot of hope in the petition working, but it's easy enough to do and the number of signers will be staggering. And the cool thing about papal infallibility is that one pope can overturn millenia of custom. Go for it. And send me the url when you do.

If you don't believe in all the doctrines of the Catholic Church, then find another religion which suits you better. Why don't you "pick on" another religion?

actually the pope (the new one that is ) said in one of his sermons that the use of condoms should no longer be frowned upon because it is the lesser of two evils aids being the ultimate evil,surf the net i an sure you will find it

The Vatican doesn't care if you die of AIDS, man. NO church does, all they care about is what ends up in the collection plate.

By all means, wear a condom if you are having sex outside of marriage, or inside of marriage if you don't trust your partner. Why do you feel that you need permission to protect yourself?

Well it isn't really the "popes policy" its basically catholic policy i.e. no sex before marriage, and sex only for reproductive purposes. So you would have to rewrite the bible to change their stance.
Second you have to think how much the pope's position on the subject really influences people. People that are catholic have sex before marriage all the time. I really don't think people act according to the pope's stance on things. Most people just act according to their own personal desires.... which makes the pope's position more of a symbolic/political subject.

That's not the way the Vatican works. The Vatican is not a government. You can't just sent petitions to the Vatican in the same way you can send a petition to your local government representatives. The Church cannot teach or promote anything that is contrary to what is good or moral. Birth control is a grave sin, and the Church cannot promote the use of birth control, and that includes condoms. Ever since the use of birth control became widespread, there have been an increase in abortions, STDs, and sexual crimes against women. Birth control has done nothing to prevent any of this, but has instead created a culture that encourages promiscuous behavior. Please read Pope Paul VI's encyclical on this topic, entitled "Humanae Vitae". It explains the Church's position on birth control quite well, and it will help you understand why the Church will not ever promote the use of condoms.

You kind of prove my point, sorry I don't wish to be glib. I questioned Atheism and you seem to have assumed that I am a Theist... if I question either of them it doesn't mean I for or against them

As for your question here, saving souls is probably outweighs saving earthly lives in the vatican's scheme of things. Whereas it doesn't in your scheme of things. To condone condom use would be to condone sex for pleasure... but it seems what is really at issue is the relative value of the body and soul.

To argue, you'd probably have to start from within Catholic doctrine and tradition as this trumps everything else, and the pope afterall is infallible therein. You'd have to argue that lessening pain is a Christian commandment etc. Change if it comes is likely to be bottom up rather than from the hierarchy though - just a thought

I read something a couple of months ago that said many in the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church were re-thinking their stance on condoms used for AIDS prevention. Wish I could remember where i read it.

The pope is much well aware of the situation of the victims of AIDS in Africa and elsewhere.
The problem is that even if he wanted to change that law he cannot, because according to catholic belief it's inscribed in the order of nature ie natural law that contraception is immoral, and the pope has no authority to change nature ( how could he). So what you're asking for is to petition the pope to leave the Catholic faith.
