The HIV virus that causes AIDS lives in body fuids such as semen, blood, and to an extent, saliva. During sex, the virus may be transmitted from semen or vaginal fluids into the other person's blood stream. This happens when the infected body fluids come into contact with mucous membranes such as the mouth, vagina, or anus. This type of tissue allows the virus to cross into the bloodstream. The virus can then reproduce in the other person's bloodstream, and the other person is now infected.
