I have a patient that was raped by an AIDS patient.How should I manage her regarding prevention of AIDS.cyesis

There is the fear of her contacting AIDS, GETTING PREGNANT,ANND POSSIBLE INFECTION

There is a standard anti-retroviral regime for people exposed to HIV, in most hospitals it is handled in the casualty department. Contact your local A+E quickly this is only given acutely. Usually AZT is used.

She should consider presumptive treatment for bacterial STIs and vaccination against possible hepatitis B exposure. Emergency contraception should routinely be offered to victims of sexual assault to help prevent pregnancy.


You say patient, and I note your profile suggests you are a practising doctor. If this is the case I am concerned that you are unaware of what actions to take in these circumstances as they are unfortunately far from rare!

well for starters you should get her to have a blood test as it is the only way to find a infection although HIV will only show up 4 weeks after infection in most cases. Well its terrible news that that happened can't see why people would do something like that but the only way to prevent it was to wear a condom etc. if they have contracted HIV then the best thing you can do is stop any infections that may occur such as TB or pnumonia (they are the biggest killers of HIV+ people) by giving antibiotics. AIDS only occurs when there are many opportunistic infections occuring all in one go so she won't have it yet.
About the pregnancy well you will just have to wait a couple of weeks before going to the doctor to find out.

You undoubtedly need professional care and counselling. Did you have the rapist charged with a criminal offence when he raped you? See your doctor.

She needs to do the right thing and go to the police and get herself a full work up by a doctor to check for any stds or infections and hiv of any kind if a pg occurs thats tough it would depend on her own feelings and thats one decission she will figure out on her own
