In the UK can you get goverment aid to set up as a professional R&D Lab?

Is it possible in the UK to set up as a research and development lab in the field of I.T. and receive government sponsorship/other sponsorship to do so?

There are small grants available to start up business in the UK, but they amount to a few thousand pounds, which is not likely to be enough to set up an R&D lab.
