What are my chances of going to college/ what college can I get into?

My parents want me to go to Austin College, I've thought about Rice University. There's also Texas A & M, Texas Tech, UTD, etc. Which of those colleges do I stand a chance in and/or is there any out of state colleges that might accept me?

Here's my stats:

I'm currently a junior
3.7 GPA (sophomore year, 1st semester)
166 PSAT score (sophmore year- practice)
My classes:
1. Chinese 3 H.
2. AP U.S Hist.
3. Physics H.
4. English 3 AP
5. Orchestra
6. Pre-Calc H.
7. Spanish 4 AP
Community Service: I know I have over 100+ hours. Volunteer for Special Needs, Teen Court Attorney, Office Aid, Tutoring, One-time Events, etc.
Work Exp: Camp Counselor over the summer.
Clubs/Positions: L.A.S.E.R (Learning About Science and Engineering Research), Photography Club (Co-Secretary), Orchestra (Class Reporter), Spanish Club (Photographer), NHS, Key Club. ---Should I have joined more clubs?
Sports: I play tennis for fun, was in track in middle school.

Anything else I am forgetting?

Awards/Honors: Orchestra Solo and Ensemble, Volunteering Ceremony, Photography ATPI Contest, NHS induction

You have an impressive resume. Remember that middle school activities will not count towards college. They'll only look at 9th - 12th grades activities.

Study hard for your SAT and get the best score you can. With your resume you won't have any problem being accepted by Texas Tech. UTD is more scientific and it will depend on your choice of majors and how much space they have available. Rice is probably the most difficult of your choices, but it's worth trying if you want to. Find out their requirements and see if you have a chance. Texas A&M is competitive as well. Yes, they do admit the top 10%. However, I know many students there who were not in the top 10% of their classes. They are other ways to get into A&M, and it's worth the effort if you want to be there. Best of luck!!!

One more thing: Don't accept "defeat" from high school counselors, teachers, or parents. Or anyone else for that matter. My son was told he would never be accepted into TAMU (by his high school counselors), but decided to apply anyway. Not only was he accepted, but graduated with honors 4 years later. So, when people tell you that you won't be accepted, that's only their opinion. It's not fact! Please remember that.

If you live in Texas and are in the top 10 percent of your class, you can easily get into the state universities. That's one of those stupid laws that have been imposed by our politicians.

I would think that you have a good chance to get into any of the college's that you have listed. What is it you want to major in? That is how I would go about picking out a college. See what college offers the best program for you. Those will be some of the best years of your life. I wish you luck. Let us all know what college you choose.

You have done great in high school so far. However, UT and A&M can be a challenge if you are not in the top 10%. You might be able to make it if you are in a minority or join the band. From former students, Rice is more difficult to get into than UT.

Texas Tech has a sliding scale based on your class rank. If you are in the top 25% then you have to make a certain SAT score. If you are in the top 50% then you have to score a slightly higher SAT to get in. Based on your scores you should have no problem getting accepted.

You would also have no problem getting into schools in neighboring states. Louisiana Tech has a good business school and seems to have great success with grads getting into med school. It has excellent biomed and nano tech programs if that is of interest. You need a 1060 SAT to qualify for out of state fee waiver. Based on your GPA and classes that should not be an issue. Tuition is under $4k/year instead of over 9k at UT. It's a great bargain.

I wouldn't join more clubs. Take part in what you enjoy. You only go to high school and college once. You need to take it seriously (obviously you are), but have fun and make some lasting friends at the same time.
