Your views on "General Skills" Lessons?

Hi, I'm currently doing a speaking to persuade topic in school (English Year 11). My chosen topic is to persuade that schools should include lessons in basic "life skills" such as first aid, engineering, DIY etc to prepare them for life when they leave school.

I'm curious as to people's views on this area? This is part of my research. I would like to know what you think of this idea, any help you could give me and any ideas you have on what sort of topics could be taught within the lessons.

The problem is that we are expecting schools to teach a wider and wider range of skills and subjects and everyone gets upset when the level of skills of students isn't as high now as it was when Adam was a boy.
Yes, I agree that life skills are important, but at what cost? Maths? No we need maths. English (in English speaking countries)? Absolutely not! Well, what? Sorry it can't happen.

Most schools that I know of, atleast the one I went to, have many CTS (Career Training Skills) courses that you can take. Some being Construction Tech, Cabinet Making, Health Sciences, Culinary Arts, Pastry Arts, Fine Arts. Not to mention Grade 11 CALM (Career and Life Management) where they teach you about job hunting, career choosing, sex education, morals/ethics, religion. It's a mandatory course for all students in the province.

That said, I think the idea is something that needs to seriously be considered. Sure, you may know how to do Math, Chem, Bio, etc well but, if you can't manage your own life in itself, whats the point in knowing anything?
