What is the history of rope halters?

can anyone explain the history, and/or provide a website where i can read about the history/origins of rope halters and horses. And arguments as to their effectiveness and if they truly are overall the better choice. I am writing a research paper, and ultimately my thesis is going to try to prove that rope halters are a better training aid, tool, and communication device for working with horses.

I cant find any information on where or how rope halters developed, just why you should use them.

The modern rope halter came from the tradtional tack of Vaqueros (Spanish cowboys). They are known as Jaquima (pronounced Hak' ma). However, rope halters have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The article (link below) also sites the Moorish influence on the development of this type halter.

I am a firm believer in the effectiveness of rope halters and have used them for several years with my horses. The modern flat web halters allow the horse to 'lean' in the halter. Example: put your hand flat on your cheek and push against it. Then put the tips of your fingers against your cheek and push against them. The tips of your fingers cause more discomfort than does the flat of your hand. This is the principle behind the narrow rope and knots in a rope halter. The pressure causes a horse to experience some discomfort and they will move off the pressure. They are a wonderful training aid.

I don't know for sure either. Would the American Indian have used rope halters? How about the Roman Army? I know the Mongolians use Camel hair halters on their camels. Good luck finding out. Don't forget to let us know what you find.
