A question regarding Fundamentalist Islam?

I am doing a senior thesis project for my Honours English class and I was wondering if anyone knows any good sources (i.e. books, articles, authors, etc. ) that would aid me in writing my research paper?

Also, I would like to trace the history of the movement and discover where it [fundamentalist Islam] began.

Please don't give me sources like wikipedia, because my teacher would fail me for using Wikipedia as a source :).

I read a fantastic book in about 2003, but I can't find it. In the process of looking, I went to Amazon and plugged in various subject lines such as fundamentalist islam history and saw a bunch reader lists. I browsed the titles in the lists and I think that's an excellent place for you to start looking for some serious reading.

check out ottaman empire on google or whatever, See what you get. It goes way back to why it was easy for mohammed to get so many followers. It was tailored to the wishes of the leaders.
