What is the first thought that comes to mind when you think of the phrase "Needle Exchange Program"?

What do you believe Needle Exchanges do besides exchange contaminated syringes for sterile ones?

Do you think needle exchange programs are helpful in fighting HIV/AIDS?".

I think it is a good idea. There are some behaviors that will never be eradicated just by the general population or our government telling us that it is not acceptable. Sex, drugs, alcohol and smoking are all dangerous behaviors practiced by many people in our country and we take steps to protect ourselves in anyway we can... examples- hand out condoms to prostitutes and low income people to prevent pregnancy and STD's, warning labels on cigarette packages, warnings on bottles and limits to the amount of alcohol we can consume and still drive. Not everyone takes the advice or advantage of the preventative measures to protect ourselves but there are enough that do that save lives. If we chose to ignore the fact that a large amount of the new HIV/AIDS cases are drug users just because it is an illegal activity we are not going to fix the problem. People will not quit drugs until they are ready or forced to. There are also intervenous drug users who do not "look" to be the type to do drugs so they could be sharing needles with their fellow drug users and then sleeping with people and spreading the disease and everyone would be shocked because they seemed to look "clean". I think the people that they are doing the exchanges with would be made more aware of the risks they are taking and who knows... maybe it will raise the awareness of the risks of sharing needles (if not the actual drug use itself)
