Developing adult writing skills using e-learning research projects?

I am currently doing a Cert Ed programme and looking at how e-learning can or cannot develop adults writing skills. I am looking for other research into this for comparison together with how text messaging and chat rooms have aided the decline in adult writing skills. I am not looking for advanced graduate style writing just basic skills level up to the Adult national certificate in literacy level 1. It is only writing skills that I need to look at as speaking and listening and reading tends to be demonstrated at higher levels than writing skills. I am a skills for life tutor delivering these type of courses using e-learning and I have found that writing seems to be at a far lower level. Can e-learning actually help with developing writing skills or does it just teach basics when and how to use punctuation, grammatical use and spelling techniques but acutally miss the main point of how to write correctly. Any help on this would be gratefully received.
