Apparently there's some 'myth' that the AIDS epidemic is the deadliest disease outbreak in US history?

So for school we have to take a myth and find out whether it's actually true or not. One of the ones that we could choose from was the myth I stated above. I've done ALOT of research and I can't find anything anywhere that would even suggest that. Has anyone ever heard of this AIDS myth?!

AIDS actually is not THAT common at all (in the US)... YET is soooo tramatic because 1. you die from it 2. it is preventable. Cancer is the leading cause of death in the world... but many types of cancer have no prevention (aside from people smoking)... AIDS affects the body and has psychological consequences... many people w/ aids could have prevented it... (not all but many) this can cause depression and suicide... Also if you were given a choice between dying from AIDS or Cancer... many would pic cancer because there is such a negative cloud around AIDS... AIDS is one of the LEAST common STD's... HPV has many many more "victims" by in some cases HPV is treatable and curable...

You're sort of right. AIDS is not the biggest killer in the United States.

HOWEVER its toll is significant nonetheless. In a worldwide scope, AIDS is a much bigger killer than it is in the US, and because of this, *all* people should be concerned about the spread of HIV as well as AIDS morbidity and mortality. After all, a tragedy is still a tragedy even if the only people who died weren't Americans. Diseases that affect young adults (such as AIDS -- HIV is often contracted between ages 15 and 29) have a serious economic impact because they wipe out large chunks of the workforce.

Let's look at AIDS in the US. With the knowledge and resources we have now, HIV s easily preventable. Because people do continue to contract the virus, Americans still need to keep health education message prominent and address the root issues that lead to transmission of HIV (health behaviors, socioeconomic factors, etc.). HIV disproportionately affects minorities and the poor -- people who often don't have proper access to health care, nor can afford drug therapy on their own. Long-term care for these patients will be a significant burden on the public health system. In flat economic terms, it would save taxpayers a helluva lot of money to help prevent HIV rather than have to treat a lot of AIDS patients. In human terms, the loss of life should tug at people's heartstrings.

Using the term "myth" implies that the statement is not only misleading, but requires total disregard. AIDS might not be the biggest killer here, but it is a huge killer in Africa and Asia. It remains a significant health issue in the US.

Well, yes.
This is the problem with political hysteria.
When AIDS first was discovered in the late 70's-early 80's, it became this huge issue, with the media proclaiming it an "epidemic" etc.

It's a horrible way to die, granted. but if you look at the REAL statistics, it's a minority killer.
Almost everyone that dies in the US dies of two things:
Cancer and heart disease.

AIDS is WAY down there.
However, there is so much political bias, that you may find a lot of hostility in telling the truth.
Welcome to America.

P.S. The same thing is happening with this Global Warming hype. The science is already coming in disproving it, yet the myth and hysteria continues.
