What is a good research topic to write about(a global topic not focused in the US)?

I'm doing a research paper right now and I'm having trouble thinking of an impressive, non-cliche topic to write about, like AIDs. She basically said "it cannot be focused in the US and it cannot have started here in the US". it has to be a global topic that includes other countries as well, such as AIDs. Any ideas and suggestions? I'd really love some!

The caste system - does it still exist? In what way and in what countries do forms of social hierarchy (caste) exist still?
African drought and what can be done about it?
The various problems getting humanity aid to people in places of crisis (political, geographical, social, etc.)
Just how safe are the nuclear power plants in the various countries that have them? That one might be one that started in the U.S. although it would be nice to know that Chernoble changed the safety regulations around the world. (I know that my friend who is an engineer in a U.S. power plant says they are required to watch documentaries of Chernoble.)
Muslim headgear. For example, was France right in forbidding school girls to wear headgear at school - impinging on more than one religion? Are certain countries right in demanding that all women wear head coverings in public, no matter what their religion?
Which country (or union of countries) has the strongest currency and why?
When the last Dodo died - the global impact of losing even one endangered species.
