Why is it Diabetes kills more people than AIDS and Cancer combined?

But gets only a fraction of government monies towards research? It is the number one cause of blindness, heart attacks, stroke, renal failure, heart failure, amputations, and numerous other complications. Why does it not receive as much research dollars as AIDS?

United States

It goes undetected for a lot of people. My mother didn't know she had diabetes until she was having a heart attack. In the emergency room they asked her "What medicines do you take for your diabetes?". That was how she found out. They said she's had it for years. She takes pills and Insulin shots. It is a shame that the disease only receives pennies for research compared to other diseases.

Far more people have it and many do not effectively treat it or control it.

Is your statement true just for the US (if that), or for the entire world? I'm sure a quick wiki search would answer my question, but it seems like world AIDS deaths outnumber world diabetes deaths. That could of course be a false perception.

It doesn't get the money because it is a treatable disease if the person who has it wants to treat it. Unfortunately, most of the time, the people who have diabetes do not want to, or are completely unwilling to change their lifestyle. Also, there are effective ways of practically curing yourself of diabetes, yet the people with it very rarely are willing to work this hard. With AIDS and cancer, it is terminal with no real hope of survival as of now, and the fight to find a cure is very important. If you are trying to find treatments that work, you should check out a book called, "The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life." It is by a man named Raymond Kurzwiel, who used to have Type 2 Diabetes, and who now does not because of this. It also lowers risks of heart disease and cancer. As for Type 1 Diabetes, there are very serious studies going into ways to cure the disease. It is, as of now, incurable, but soon I believe there will be a cure for it. Ultimately, it is sad that more money is not being put into research for these diseases, but at least some is. Everyone needs help, and we all have to help each other find it.

Umm ... because it doesn't kill more people than those combined. Where did you get that fact. Becacuse it is a FACT, that heart disease is the number one cause of death, followed by cancer as the number two killer, then respiratory disease, unintentional injuries, diseases of the digestive system, endocrine diseases, diseases of the nervous system, mental disorders, suicide, and genito-urinary diseases. In fact, diabetes isn't even in the top ten, as you can see. This varies of course, from country to country (for example, in Africa, a lot of deaths would be caused by AIDS, and many other things that aren't even an issue in other countries) ... but typically, a similar pattern is seen in all of them.

This is studied quite a bit in fact, you can find this information on many statistics websites. Actually, according to National Diabetes Statistics, it is the sixth leading cause of death (only disease based deaths) in the United States. The first of which, is heart disease, followed by cancer, etc. as I said above.
