I am having difficulty finding a good vegetarian dog food. It has been Vet recommended.? |
My Lab has recently had Urate stones removed and the vet has recommended a vegetarian diet based on the type of stones he has. I have been feeding him Medi-Cal Vegetarian formula, which seems palatable to him, but he continues to vomit bile at least two to three times per week, and never has solid stools. Can anyone receommed a vegetarian dog food that would help aid in prevention of Urate stones. The only other one that my vet can recommend is Hills UD formula, which does not seem to get good review. It would seem that all the research that I have done requires him to be on a low purine diet. I am now overloaded with information and I am not expert. It would seem that Dalmations are also predisposed to Urate Stones as well. Anyone with suggestions would be helpful. Natural Balance Vegetarian Formula or AvoDerm Natural Vegetarian . I personally favor AvoDerm but Natural Balance is a great product as well. RoyalCanin is another good company to research. All three are low purine diets. Occasionally you can give your lab low-fat cottage cheese, it is a great treat/snack for them and great for the skin/coat. Dogs on a low purine diet can not have red meats, poultry, brewers yeast. etc etc etc the list goes on and on! I would contact the manufacture direct and ask them where in your area do they sell the product, I am sure they will be happy to tell you. I would take your dog to a different vet. Dogs are not vegetarians and that is why he is having problems digesting it and having runny stools. You need to find a dog food which has meat in it and no vegetables. Your dog's enzymes and bacteria are all screwed up because they are meant to process meat. The stones are a direct result of a poor diet. It is not your fault. All dog foods in stores have corn by-products in them which is not good for a dog. But we pet owners don't understand this because we expect dog food from well known companies to be right. Anyway, talk to another vet and see what he/she tells you. A vet should also have dog food when a dog needs a special kind of food. You should not have to hunt for it. |
