My dad's GF gave my 2 yo a sleep aid?

It was our anniversary and my dad offered to have the kids stay the night. After we picked them up, my older boys told us that his gf gave the 2 yo a pill and said that it would help him fall asleep. Of course I was freaked out and called my dad as soon as we got home. She gave him melatonin. I did a little research and it said that toddlers probably shouldn't have it but that it in a small dose it probably won't hurt them.
I kind of feel that even if it is flintstones vitamin, that you should have permission to give it to someone elses child, even if it is your own grandchild. I don't know what he is thinking(my dad). He didn't do this when we were kids.
How should I handle this?

Well of course you still want your children to be around their grandfather and grandmother. If this is true you should just tell your dad and his girlfriend that it upsets you that they didn't ask your permission to give your child medicine. And hopefully they will understand.And tell them that you don't want them giving your children any medication without your permission first.

Definitely let him know that he crossed a very dangerous line, and really, talk to his gf. She obviously didn't know what she was doing, and shouldn't have tried giving your son drugs. Also, I suggest that you not leave your kids there anymore if it's going to happen again.
Plus, how old are your older boys? If they were old enough to know the dangers of giving a 2 yo sleep aids, they should have said something to your dad and his gf themselves.

A line was fully crossed there. As a babysitter and nanny, I never give children anything that the parents haven't approved, whether its food, tv, or medicines. You need to talk to them about this incident, and let them know that you're very uncomfortable with them medicating your child without your permission.

get somebody else to take care of them someone u trust and if not leave a note or something so they know wat not to give him.make up something like hes allergic to an ingredient in common medicines so he wont give him anything.

Tell your dad that from now on, he nor his girlfriend are allowed to give the children any type of medicine without your approval. If they break that rule, keep your kids away from them.

I believe if someone gave my child a medication of any type without my consent I would be having a serious conversation with them. When I leave my girls with a sitter I leave specific instructions on any medications that are to be given and how much. No one should give a child any medication without the permission of a parent. What if your child would have had an allergic reaction? Would they have known what do do?
I am a registered nurse btw. Never give a two year old medication without first speaking to their physician. Kids can react much differently to some medications. Never give a child an adult dosage of any medication.
I would have a conversation with your dad and his gf together. She needs to understand the ramifications of giving your child medication without your permission. Maybe you need to find a different person to watch your children? It is scary in today's society to find people you can trust to watch your children. We shouldn't have to worry about family!
