The window period is the time from infection until a test can detect any change. The average window period with antibody tests is 22 days. Antigen testing cuts the window period to approximately 16 days and NAT further reduces this period to 12 days.
There can be false positives and false negatives. That is why the tests are always run twice, usually6 mos. apart.


Symptoms of AIDS and HIV Infection
Some people infected with HIV are asymptomatic (no symptoms) while others may develop symptoms of HIV from two to 15 years after initial infection. The symptoms are as follows:


extreme fatigue

rapid weight loss from an unknown cause (more than 10 lbs. in two months for no reason)

appearance of swollen or tender glands in the neck, armpits or groin, for no apparent reason, lasting for more than four weeks

unexplained shortness of breath, frequently accompanied by a dry cough, not due to allergies or smoking

persistent diarrhea

intermittent high fever or soaking night sweats of unknown origin

a marked change in an illness pattern, either in frequency, severity, or length of sickness

appearance of one or more purple spots on the surface of the skin, inside the mouth, anus or nasal passages

whitish coating on the tongue, throat or vagina

forgetfulness, confusion and other signs of mental deterioration


It can take as short as a year to as long as 10 to 15 years to go from being infected with HIV to "full-blown" AIDS.

If you think you have been exposed, call your physcian. You will need a test now, one in 6 months, another in a year, and another at 1 1/2 years if the yearly is negative. At least that is what the schedule used to be. I had an unknown status needle stick and that is how my testing went, that was 5 years ago. Usually the gastrointestinal, pulmonary and obviously hematologic systems are mostly affected. Aids in itself doesnt make you sick and therefore doesnt have symptoms as such. It breaks down your immune system and your body then has little defense to any infection. The symptoms are therefore those of the disease/infection contracted. Most AIDS victims die from catching a cold or flu (with of course cold or flu symptoms).

the disease then progresses to aids

as i said before it could depend on the persons general lifestyle because it may take 12 to 13 years to reach this stage in some people but only 3 years for others

at this stage the immune system is severely compromised and the body can not fight off infections
at this point the person is likely to develop TB,certain forms of cancer, pneumonia and meningitis and other serious diseases and/or infections

there are medications on the market that help with the treatment and management of this disease however
its very important for the person to eat healthy, practice good hygiene, exercise and avoid risky unhealthy behavior like smoking,drug use, excessive drinking and sex with multiple partners.
