My daughter passed her hearing test at birth, but now at 2 years has profound hearing loss. What happened?

My daughter passed the hearing test at birth. She had major abdominal surgery at age 1 month, in which she was operated on and spent some time in the NICU for recovery. She then started having ear infections by 5 months. At 9 months she got ear tubes. She did not have another infection until she was about 20 months. Now she is two, and she just took the Baer hearing test and was diagnosed with profound hearing loss. She seems to hear some sounds, so we are praying that a hearing aid will assist her. We are looking forward to get her to hear and speak, but we can't help but look backward to what caused the loss. We were told that her surgery, or more specifically antibiotics that she was given during her operation, could have had an impact to her hearing. I don't recall being warned about this! Any advise?

At age two, I was diagnosed as being deaf in my right ear, I have a small amount of hearing loss in my left ear. My was nerve damage from conplicated circumstances while I was in the womb. I don't think you said if the hearing loss was in both ears. Hearing aids will help. In my case, I did learn to speak okay. However, with everything being a little muffled and such, I misheard some things and pronounced them wrong. And now, at 23, well all my life, I have had a small accent that some people notice and some don't. I know the previous post siad antibiotics would have to be used for a while to cause any damage. Just keep researching if you are wondering. But at such a young age to work with her, I'm sure she will progress fine.

Sometimes the antibiotics, such as gentamycin, can cause hearing loss. The ear infections are problematic for some children as well. However, I think that the antibiotics would've been longer term than just for the operation to cause hearing loss, and it's not common for antibiotics to be given long term to babies. (they are usually very aggressive giving them, but equally aggressive getting rid of them).
I am not sure that her surgery would've had an impact, but really, it sounds like there wasn't much of a choice.
It is natural to wonder why, but you'll probably never know why.
