Will she and her baby get AIDS?

I have a friend who's husband has AIDS but it's undetectable because he takes all his meds on time everyday (He's had it for about 5 years). She tests all the time and always come back negative (She's been lucky). They read in a magazine that more than likely if she got pregnant they can have a baby who is healthy because he doesn't have enough of the virus to give them? What do you think?

NO CRUEL ANSWERS, PLEASE!

I'm in the same boat but I'm HIV+ and my husband is HIV-.

I do understand that your friend's husband can get sperm washing - I don't know too much about it though. And you're right, if he is undetectable then there is a lesser risk of tranmission BUT there is still that risk of transmission to the baby.

They need to speak to a doctor at a sexual health clinic. Best of luck to them.

The fact that the husband is taking his medication and keeping viral load down reduces the chances of transmission, but it is still possible to transmit to his wife.

If the wife gets pregnant, she needs to determine whether or not she is HIV+, an HIV+ mother who takes anti-retroviral drugs is much less likely to transmit HIV to the fetus.

Artificial insemination may be a plausible means of inducing pregnancy while reducing the risk of transmission, but I don't know a lot about that. A doctor specializing in such a field would need to be consulted.

Does the husband have AIDS or is HIV positive? There is a difference.

If they are willing to take that chance, then I say they go for it. BUT she needs to keep in mind that if she does get pregnant and during the pregnancy he develops full blown AIDS and they have unprotected sex, there is a VERY VERY high chance the baby will be born with HIV.
