What's the Best Food to Prevent Diarrhea in Boston Terriers?

My 7-year old Boston Terrier perpetually has diarrhea. It is not uncontrollable. He certainly waits until I take him on walks. However, I'm unable to even pick up his waste because it is so watery. He currently eats a cheaper brand of food (Kibbles & Bits Homestyle) and has three different kinds of treats (Canine CarryOuts - beef & cheese, Al's Grill - burgers, & Al's Grill - steaks). I'm terribly concerned about his digestion. It certainly can't be good for him to rarely have solid feces. Please let me know if there is a food that is proven to aid in healthy digestion. Also, should I not give him the treats I currently have? He has been taken to the vet on several occasions in the past due to the excessive diarrhea; however, the vet usually tests his feces and says that there is not an infection. I usually have to put him on the bland diet (the "medical" food) for a few days, his bowels go back to normal, then any other food that I give him causes diarrhea again.

Kibbles & Bits is one of the worst dog foods out there.
Here is a site that will show you which dog foods are the best and the worst. I suggest that you get any one of the dog foods that are top rated.

Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina, and etc contain "meat and bone meal" which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by "rendering plants" , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the "soup" and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as "animal fat", the rest of the animals' remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal.
You can read more about it here.

Here is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good.

Top rated dog foods like Canidae contain good healthy ingredients.

Kibbles N' Bits is just about the WORST food you can give your dog. You'd be better off feeding him out of the garbage. Same for those treats. They're all full of fillers and chemical preservatives. As the other poster suggested, visit http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com. Choose a food that contain little or no fillers (ingredients like wheat, corn, soy, animal by-products, etc.) The website can give you more info.

You are right to be concerned! Chronic loose bowels can lead to dehydration!

I feed Canidae All Life Stages. It is all natural with no fillers, no by-products and no artificial preservatives. The store brands are the equivilent of junk food for dogs.

If it continues on a premium dog food (such as above), consult a DIFFERENT vet.

Add: www.dogfoodanalysis.com - Canidae is 5 out of 6 starts.

Try a food that doesn't have much for grains in it. Grains are a very common reason why canines have loose stools.

Look up a brand called California Natural, I personally feed my dog EVO and she has a grain problem. California Natural is a great choice for those looking for a less-grain food without feeding raw.

You will receive plenty of suggestions from others regarding diet suggestions (ie, Canidae, Solid Gold, Innova EVO, ect), and any one of the higher quality foods should help. However, if you still continue to have problems with his stools, you may want to have him get a blood workup. Our Boxer had frequent loose stools and after 2 years we finally did the blood work & discovered she has pancreatic insufficiency. A little powder in her food, and her poops are regularly solid for the first time since we got her over 2 years ago.

The treats are probably not the best if your dog has a sensitive stomach, your best bet would be a bland biscuit for treats, or making your own at home- there are planty of recipes.

Good luck!

Everything your feeding the dog is junk. Stop all treats and try Natural Balance dog food. It has limited ingredients to deal with food allergies. I would start with the Natural Balance Duck and Potatoe, but any premium dog food without corn, wheat, soy or by-products would probably be o.k. since the food you are feeding currently is so bad.

Here's a link to why kibbles 'n bits is such a poor quality food.

Science Diet makes a food called Science Diet Sensitive Stomach, available at Petsmart or your local vet can order the bags. I feed it to my dogs. They love it. It's not cheap, but when it comes to dog food, you really get what you pay for.

You mentioned the "bland" diet. Dogs aren't like humans - they don't particularly care if their food has lots of flavor. They just want something that fills them up and doesn't make them sick. Consistency is the key to a settled stomach in dogs. You want to feed the same food every day. They don't want or need variety in their diet. Eliminate the treats you've been giving. Those are very cheap, poorly made treats. You know, there are no nutrition regulations put on dog treats, so for all you know, you could be feeding your dog shoe leather, and wouldn't even know it. It's not regulated by the FDA like human food is, so you have to be careful what you give. You need to try out Science Diet dog biscuits. They are inexpensive and you can get them at Petsmart or your local vet clinic.
