Why don't people receiving public aid need to pass a urine test?

Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job. I work,
they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random urine test with which I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test.
Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting on their butt, doing drugs, while I work. . . . Can you imagine how much money the state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check ?

I wish I could agree with you. I do, on so many points. I admit that I am resentful of those people who take advantage of the system. I also admit to being bitter about how much taxes they take out of my paycheck. I am FURIOUS about the fact that I feel that they are blatently WASTING my taxes. I know they are. You know, if the government would just get rid of some of the useless positions in public office they have, we'd all be better off. I mean, who needs a stupid commission for beautifying the city? That should be VOLUNTEER work!

The fundamental problem with making people pass a urine test is this. The adults may not pass, but what about their children? It's not the child's fault that their mom is a loser addict who can't keep her legs closed. Sure, that kids will statistically grow up to be a loser, too, but he/she deserves a chance. You can't just take those kids away, either. Smoking pot is not immediate danger to a child. Plus, have you paid attention to the foster care system? It's a disaster. Do you know how many children need to be adopted, but never will be because they are over the age of 5? Yes. Elementary school kids deserve permanent homes too.

What really kills me is the Mexicans. I do NOT mean to sound racist. I treat each person on an individual basis. But, let me put it this way. We had serious fire's here in San Diego. Where I live was pretty bad. When we came back from evacuation, there was no water, etc. I decided to go out and help (because I had plenty of drinking water in those 5 gallon things). So, I went to the food/water drive and helped people load their cars with disaster relief stuff. It's a small town. I know a lot of people. I recognised a lot of Mexicans who lived IN town, which was not affected by the fire. They were lining up for food when they were only supposed to get water. I even saw a group of them pushing a family (also of hispanics) who had lost their house. We have a lot of illegal immigrants who are like scavengers. Anything that is charity for people who lost their homes was snapped up by illegals. I ended up gathering up all the clothes I could spare, blankets, etc and physically giving it directly to the families I KNEW had lost their homes (people of all races, just to point out that when I state illegal Mexicans, it is the truth, not a racist slur).

There will always be people who take advantage of the system... However, there are also a lot of people whom it helps. You can't have one without the other.

i agree with you both except for the part when thomas said that police are scared of drug dealers. i live in watts and the police here are very rough they pass laws within the comunity. like two or more males can walk together otherwise they will take them in. but i also agree when you said that why they dont get a sample of urine from these drug users and we have to get one in order to get paid.

Chances are the company that you work for has to administer those urine tests because of their insurance company requiring it.

I think it's all an infringement on personal privacy, what one does while there are not a work on there personal time has nothing to do with their employers.

If we have to have a welfare state, I generally agree with your idea. Your government has taken a different route: making drunk driving laws so strict that the BAC would not make the motorist biologically drunk, just a legal definition. I dont drink and have not for years. Then you have the seatbelt and cell phone laws. Littering laws are front burner with our "public servants." I would trade relaxing or eliminating these laws to require the welfare crowd to report to gymnasium and study with each other about how to get a productive job and, ok, take a urine test. Police agencies are afraid of the ghetto areas where welfare is a way of life. They are afraid of the drug dealers.
