Debt collection advice? |
I enrolled in a semester of classes with financial aid two years ago. After registering and beginning classes online they had gotten my last name wrong so I couldn't take any of the proctored tests because my driver's license did not match the name the school had. I withdrew from the classes within the full refund time frame so financial aid did not pay my tuition and I thought that I was fine. About six months after that semester ended I began receiving collection calls, so I talked with several people at the school, in all different departments, and they admitted their mistake and told me not to worry about it anymore. Today I now got a threatening letter from a collection agency, I have no record that I dropped the class because it was online but I have record of the mistaken name and my financial aid award letter for that quarter do I have grounds to dispute the debt? Please help I have a consultation with a lawyer next week and need advice on what to do about this until then. I told the agency that I was meeting with the lawyer and they promptly responded " a lawyer will not pay off the debt you owe submit the payment in full immedietley or we will take action agaisn't you" First of all, is this debt listed on your credit report. If it is then do the following:
If you get a collection call, say that you are seeing a lawyer next week and hang up. I would call the same people you had talked to before at the school itself, and get them to send you some thing in the mail or by fax reflecting the mistake they had made in regards to that. if they dont have one generate one for them and ask them to sign and fax it to you. If that doesnt pan out i would write a one page letter detailing the experience and send it to the three credit bureaus and the creditor. |
