On a multiple choice entrance exam, you only have a certain amount of time, so you need to pick off those questions you can answer without doing all the math, and then go after the ones you'll need to actually figure out the hard way.

1. Looks like you'll need to calculate, since you can't rule out b or c with quick logic. Well laid flat on the bottom at the hypotenuse of 5m and 4m the max would be the sq root of 39. take that squared, or 39 and add the height squared, 9 to get the sq root of 48 for your answer which is 6.928 5*the sq root of 2 = 7.07 won't fit, so you know the answer is c the sq root of 41.


2. The area of a circle is piRsquared, so if the square of the radius would be 16 which means the area of both the square and the circle are 16pisquared. The area of a square is the side dimension squared, so the square root of 16pisquared is your answer which is 4pi

3. The area of the cylinder is piRsq times 24 or 153.86 times 24 or 3692.64 Divide by 231 to get just under 16. so c is your answer

4. cost times 1.30 = 94,640 so divide both sides by 1.3 to get a cost of 72,800. Multiply by 1.10 to get the 10% markup price of $80,080 or b

5. 720 = 90% of 20% of the marked price. So divide 720 by .9 for the first discounted price of 800 and divide that by .8 for the original marked price of 1,000 answer is b
