Blind judo: just what in heaven does this mean?

I'm somewhat past the range of legal blindness (although of a defect with temporal correction, aka "glasses" :p still, 20/600 in my better eye is nothing to laugh about). I started taking judo very recently and I feel pretty comfortable with it. I have lots of fun and it allows my eyes a very deserved rest because it doesn't depend so much on what I'm seeing, rather than on what I'm touching. Therefore, I wanted to ask my sensei if I should start training without depending on my visual correction aids at all (he has trained others in adapted judo before, so I trust him on it). Before I ask him, though, I'd like for somebody to make a little light of this for me:

QUALIFICATION FOR COMPETITIONS
IBSA has established the following categories for qualification:
鈥?B1 = From perception of light in either eye to the
perception of light, but without the ability to recognize the
shape of a hand at any distance or in any direction.
鈥?B2 = From the ability to recognize the shape of a hand to
a visual acuity of 2/60 and/or a visual field of less than 5
degrees.
鈥?B3 = From a visual acuity above 2/60 up to visual acuity
of 6/60 and/or a visual field of more than 5 degrees and
less than 20 degrees.
All classifications will be based on both eyes, with the aid of the best
corrective lenses, e.g., all athletes who wear contact lenses or
eyeglasses should be wearing said eyewear when tested (if they
intend to make use of them while competing).

From what I understand, with my sight unassisted by glasses, I fall under B2. What I don't understand is the addendum at the end: does it mean it is obligatory to use corrective lenses when you're being tested, or only if you intend to use them on a match?

I have never heard of this before now. But according what you have posted it appears to me that if you are going to use corrective lens in competition you must also use them during testing.

You may have a great advantage in Judo without you knowing. Most judokas don't relax enough. They spend too much time and energy looking down when competing. My instructor would have us fight blindfolded. This forced us to use our other senses. There was no longer a reason to look down. You learn to feel what the other person is doing to attack or counter. It is a great training method. We were very successful. That is one of the reasons why. We had a great instructor.

ONLY wear corrective gear if you intend to use it while competing.. if you want to go with your natural eyes, don't wear them when tested.. but i guess you won't be allowed to wear corrective lenses later, so think about it before you test i guess.
